PORTLAND, ME. - In what was a see-saw battle through forty minutes, the Portland Pirates scored four unanswered goals, including three in the third period, to double up the Lowell Devils 6-3 on Friday night at the Cumberland County Civic Center.

Lowell was able to strike first, capitalizing on sloppy play by the Pirates. Portland was called for four penalties in the first 7 minutes of the period, leading to a 5-on-3 advantage for the Devils. Just 11 seconds into the two man advantage, Barry Tallackson recorded his first of the night and 20th of the season. Nicklas Bergfors and Grant Marshall assisted on the goal. Though the Devils tallied eight of the first nine shots of the game, the Pirates would rebound in the second half of the period and shots were even at 10 after twenty minutes.

Midway through the second period, the Pirates seized the momentum and the lead. Portland's second-leading scorer Geoff Platt got behind the Devils defense and came in alone against Frank Doyle, beating him glove side on the breakaway. Just three minutes later, Tyler Bouck collected his sixth of the season to give the Pirates the 2-1 advantage. They would not hold it for long, though, as Benoit Mondou picked up where he left off Tuesday night in Manchester, tallying his fourth goal in two games when he buried a hard wrister following a feed from D Sean Zimmerman. Just fifteen seconds later, Tallackson struck again, finishing off his own rebound to propel Lowell to a 3-2 lead. Before the wild and wooly second period would end, however, Portland would tie it up at three apiece on a B! runo St. Jacques goal.

In contrast to the four lead changes in the second period, the third frame was all Portland. The Pirates fired 14 shots on goal, scoring twice against the Doyle, and once on an empty net late in the game. Lowell was outshot 14-10 in the period, and 36-26 in the game. Both teams went 1-for-5 on the power play, and the Devils have now successfully killed 21 of their last 23 penalties.

Lowell will host back-to-back games this weekend, starting on Saturday, March 1 when they face the Norfolk Admirals at the Tsongas Arena at 7:05 p.m. Then it's a special Sunday on March 2 when the Devils host the CVS Celebrity All-Star Game at 1:30 p.m. See former NHLers like Andy Brickley, Bob Beers, Ken Hodge and Don Sweeney.
