MANCHESTER, NH - A three-goal surge in the first period powered the Portland Pirates over the Manchester Monarchs by a score of 4-2 at the Cumberland County Civic Center in front of a capacity crowd of 6,774 fans on Friday night.

Manchester (33-18-2-4, 72 points) is in a second place tie with the Hartford Wolfpack (32-16-2-6, 72 points) in the Atlantic Division. Portland (36-14-5-3, 80 points) is in first place in the Atlantic Division.

Right wing Pierre Parenteau capitalized on a puck just out of reach from Monarchs goaltender Adam Hauser at the 56-second mark of the opening period. Defenseman Aaron Rome sent a shot from the point in on Hauser who made the initial save. The puck squirted out in front of Hauser just far enough for him to not be able to cover it. Center Joel Perrault got a shot off but the puck trickled to the left of Hauser directly to Parenteau. With Hauser sprawled out on the ice, Parenteau chipped the puck into the back of the net for his 15th goal of the season.

The puck played a little pinball for the second goal of the game as it bounced from Pirate-to-Pirate ending in the back of the net at 6:06 of the first stanza. Right wing Garett Bembridge sent the puck from the left point to defenseman Bruno St. Jacques in the right face-off circle. St. Jacques redirected the puck over to center Geoff Peters to the left of the net and Peters jammed the puck past Hauser for his 15th goal of the season.

On the power play with center Yanick Lehoux serving a holding penalty, Perrault scored his 11th goal of the season at 18:47 of the first period. Right wing Simon Ferguson sent a fluttering puck through traffic and to Perrault to the right of the net. Perrault was able to sneak the puck just over Hauser's left skate to give the Pirates a 3-0 lead. Rome earned his second assist of the night on the goal.

Defenseman Richard Seeley put the Monarchs on the board at 1:05 of the middle frame. Seeley sent a slap shot through traffic from the left point that bounced off Pirates players and past Portland's goaltender Nathan Marsters. Left wings Jeff Tambellini and Jeff Giuliano assisted on Seeley's second tally of the season.

With 1:22 remaining in the game, Tambellini stole the puck from the Pirates and skated the puck toward the net. Tambellini slipped the puck under Marsters for his 24th goal of the season.

Just as the Monarchs came within one goal, center Ryan Shannon and right wing Dustin Penner broke 2-on-1 down the ice toward the vacant Monarchs net. They passed the puck back-and-forth before Shannon hammered it into the empty net for his 18th goal of the season at 19:17 of the third period.

Hauser (17-10-2) took the loss with 31 saves on the night. Marsters (17-9-2) earned the win stopping 35 shots.

Manchester went 0-for-5 on the power play. Portland was 1-for-4 with the man advantage.
