Norfolk Admirals News Release
Matt Keith and Jason Morgan had a goal and an assist apiece, and Corey Crawford made 36 saves as the Admirals defeated the Providence Bruins 4-2 on Friday night in Rhode Island.
The Admirals sailed to a two-goal lead less than six minutes into the game. With just under five minutes done in the first period, Pavel Vorobiev skated solo into the attacking zone as his teammates went off for a line change. He sent a shot from the half wall to the right of Providence goaltender Brian Eklund that handcuffed the netminder, finding its way to the back of the net between the stick and right leg at 4:48. Just under a minute later, Matt Keith sent a shot through traffic from the left face-off circle that eluded Eklund at 5:46. The two goals came on Norfolk's first three shots of the game. Corey Crawford stood tall in net in the opening stanza, stopping 15 Providence shots in the period to preserve a two-goal lead through twenty minutes.
The Bruins closed to within one goal of Norfolk 2:32 into the second period. Sean Curry sent a shot from the blue line that deflected off an Admirals' stick and past Crawford. However, Norfolk charged back with two more quick goals just four minutes later. James Wisniewski sent a wrist shot from the point that was deflected into the back of the net by Jason Morgan for a man-advantage goal at 6:55. The Admirals extended their advantage to three goals just 33 seconds later. Keith sent a pass from the corner to Colin Fraser at the bottom of the slot. Fraser redirected the feed past Eklund at 7:27. Crawford remained solid between the pipes as he turned aside 13 of 14 shots in the second stanza helping Norfolk to maintain a 4-1 lead.
Providence cut their deficit to two goals as Tyler Redenbach scored a two-on-one goal at 12:03. However, that was the only one of nine Bruins' shots that got past Crawford in the final frame as Norfolk defeated the Bruins 4-2.
Corey Crawford was solid in net as he stopped 36 of 38 shots to earn the victory. Brian Eklund was saddled with the loss and stopped 18 of 22 shots.
The Admirals were 1-5 on the power play while Providence was 0-3.
The Admirals next take the ice tomorrow night at 7:05 against the Springfield Falcons. Catch all the action with host Pete Michaud on the radio at 670-AM WPMH and 1270-AM WTJZ.
