
Syvret named 2005 Golden Horseshoe Athlete of the Year

Hamilton Bulldogs defenceman Danny Syvret has been named the winner of the 2005 Golden Horseshoe Athlete of the Year Award.
Syvret, a 20-year-old native of Millgrove, Ontario, received a number of accolades and had a number of accomplishments in 2005.
He began the year by winning a gold medal with Team Canada at the World Junior Hockey Championships in January. Syvret scored the winning goal in Canada's 6-1 victory over Russia in the final game. In May, he won the Memorial Cup Championship as captain of the Ontario Hockey League's London Knights. Also in May, he won the 2005 Max Kaminsky Trophy as the OHL's top defenceman and was named the Canadian Hockey League's Defenceman of the Year. In June, Syvret was selected by the Edmonton Oilers in the 3rd round, 81st overall, in the 2005 NHL Entry Draft.
Syvret is currently playing in his first professional season with the Bulldogs and has collected 13 assists in 40 games.
The Golden Horseshoe Athlete of the Year Award is presented annually to one person who has demonstrated superior athletic performances at the provincial, national, or international level. The athlete must either be a resident of or have spent a significant period of time in the Golden Horseshoe area. It is the first time in the 11-year history of the award that a hockey player has received the honour.
The other finalists for the award were McMaster University wrestler Ellen Macro and professional golfer Alena Sharp.
