Binghamton Senators News Release

BINGHAMTON, NY - For the first time in four tries, the Toronto Marlies beat the Binghamton Senators 3-2 at the Broome County Veterans Memorial Arena on Friday night.

It didn't take long for the Marlies to light the goal lamp as forward Bates Battaglia put home a rebound chance past Binghamton goaltender Kelly Guard just 90 seconds after the opening face off. Kris Newbury and Brad Leeb picked up the assists on Battaglia's power-play tally.

Toronto extended its lead to 2-0 later in the first period when Newbury picked up his 17th goal of the season and his second point of the contest. Battaglia also picked up his second point of the night with the lone assist on Newbury's goal, which came at the 16:13 mark of the first period.

With Toronto's Jay Harrison in the penalty box serving a holding minor, Binghamton was able to cut its deficit to 2-1 thanks to Denis Hamel's 36th goal of the year and franchise-record 18th tally of the season on the power-play. Hamel took a rebound from Steve Martins' original shot and put it past the sprawled out Toronto net minder to bring the good guys in white to within one goal. Martins and Brandon Bochenski each picked up an assist on Binghamton's first goal.

However, Toronto would take its second two-goal lead of the contest before the second period could expire. Andy Wozniewski recorded his third goal of the season, at the 17:19 mark of the middle frame, to give the Marlies a 3-1 advantage. The assists were given to Ben Ondrus and Brenden Bell.

After a 23-minute delay due to a Zamboni malfunction, the teams finally emerged from the dressing rooms for the third period of play.

Neither team was able to find the back of the net during the third period until the Sens pulled Kelly Guard in favor of an extra attacker. With the six-on-five situation in Binghamton's favor, Charlie Stephens picked up his 15th tally of the year to cut the Marlies' lead to 3-2.

Unfortunately, the Sens could not find the equalizer before time could expire as they fell to the Marlies by a final score of 3-2.

Kelly Guard was given the nod in net for the Sens and made 27 saves on 30 shots. J.S. Aubin turned aside 28 of 30 Binghamton offerings for his 15th victory this year.

The Sens were one for seven on the power play while the visiting Marlies closed out the contest with one for eight man-up chances.

The Senators return to action tomorrow night when the Hamilton Bulldogs make a visit to the Arena. The game is scheduled for a 7:05 p.m. face off.
