June 19, 2018 - American Association (AA)
Sioux Falls Canaries News Release

The Sioux Falls Canaries stranded a season-high 13 runners in a 4-2 loss to the Wichita Wingnuts at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium in Wichita on Tuesday night.

A three-run third inning for Wichita would be the difference in the game. The Birds left the tying run on in scoring position for five consecutive innings at one point in the defeat.

Sioux Falls opened the scoring on the game's first pitch, which Jordan Smith hit over the right field wall for his first home run as a Bird.

All three of the Wingnuts' runs in the third inning would come on ground balls. Tony Thomas drove the first in on a fielders' choice ground ball with the bases loaded and no one out.

Logan Trowbridge drove in the second on a ground ball through the left side, and Hunter Clanin followed that up with an RBI infield single of his own.

All three runs were charged to Canaries starter Cesilio Pimentel. The lefty allowed three runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings of work, walking three and striking out three. It was his first outing all year when he allowed more than one earned run.

Smith would drive in another run for the Birds in the top of the fourth, hitting an RBI single to cut the Wingnuts' lead to 3-2. Smith finished the game 3-for-5 with a home run, a double, a stolen base and two runs batted in.

But the Birds left runners stranded on first and third to end the inning. The Canaries also left the potential tying run on in scoring position in innings five through eight. They would not score for the rest of the game.

After an RBI single from Ryne Willard gave the Wingnuts a key insurance run, Daniel Tillman worked a 1-2-3 ninth to ice a 4-2 Wichita win.

The Birds and Wingnuts meet again tomorrow night at 7 p.m. from Wichita. Canaries fans can hear the game on Sioux Falls Sports Radio 98.1 FM and AM 1230 KWSN or online at kwsn.com.
