Wichita Wingnuts News Release
WICHITA, Kan. - Three two-out RBI singles and four scoreless innings from the bullpen helped the Wichita Wingnuts to a 4-2 win over the Sioux Falls Canaries on Tuesday night at Lawrence-Dumont Stadium.
Sioux Falls (11-18) grabbed a 1-0 lead just one pitch into the game, as Jordan Smith cracked a solo homer off Wingnuts starter Travis Banwart (3-1). The Wingnuts (18-12) had the answer in the third, however, striking for three runs to move in front. Tony Thomas plated the first run with a fielder's choice bouncer to short, then Logan Trowbridge and Hunter Clanin added two-out RBI singles in the frame for a 3-1 Wichita lead.
The Canaries pulled to within 3-2 in the fourth against Banwart, as Smith singled home Maxx Garrett. But the Wingnuts right-hander buckled down to retire the next two hitters and escape the inning with minimal damage.
The final four innings belonged to the Wingnuts bullpen, beginning with Brady Bowen in the sixth. With first and third and one out, Bowen induced a 4-6-3 double play to escape trouble. Jackson Sigman followed a similar format in the seventh, escaping a bases-loaded situation with a 5-2-3 double play to keep Wichita in front.
Mark Haynes made his Lawrence-Dumont Stadium debut with a scoreless top of the eighth, striking out the side to strand the potential tying run in scoring position. The Wingnuts added a critical insurance tally in the home half of the frame; Hunter Clanin smacked a two-out double and raced around to score on Ryne Willard's RBI single to double the Wichita lead at 4-2.
Daniel Tillman then closed out the victory with a scoreless top of the ninth, setting down the Canaries in order with a pair of strikeouts.
The Wingnuts and Canaries continue their series on Wednesday. Wichita will start right-hander Jordan Cooper (2-3, 6.08), while Sioux Falls will counter with lefty Joe Bircher (3-3, 6.44). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM, and will be broadcast on 1410 AM/93.9 FM KGSO, TuneIn and americanassociationbaseball.tv.
