Minnesota Lynx News Release
MINNEAPOLIS/ST. PAUL - The Minnesota Lynx today announced that they have reached a buyout agreement with seven-year veteran Anna DeForge. The team today also waived 2009 third-round selection Emily Fox and Tye'sha Fluker, along with placing Kathrin Ress on the Suspended List due to Italian National Team obligations. With today's transactions, Minnesota is down to 11 players on its roster.
"We were faced with some extremely difficult decisions today," said Lynx Executive Vice President Roger Griffith. "If you look around the league, the amount of talent that is not making teams this year is hard to believe. That speaks volumes to the incredible level of athleticism, talent and abilities of the players that make up the 143 roster spots that the WNBA offers today. These are the premier female athletes and the best women's basketball players in the world. The level of play in the WNBA has never been better and we expect a tremendous 2009 WNBA season."
DeForge, originally signed by Minnesota as a free agent on Feb. 19, 2008, played one season with the Lynx. In 2008, the five-foot-ten guard averaged 8.5 ppg in 34 games, all starts. The seven-year WNBA veteran has career averages of 10.4 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.1 assists per game. DeForge, a 2007 WNBA All-Star, is a career .375 percent three-point shooter and has appeared in 230 career games, 206 of which were starts.
Fox, Minnesota's third round selection (30th overall) in the 2009 WNBA Draft, played in one preseason game totaling three points, two assists and one rebounds in 17 minutes of action.
"We were pleased to give Emily the opportunity to compete for one of our 11 roster spots," said Griffith. "This was the most competitive training camp we've ever had in the 11 years of this franchise. When we first drafted Emily, we spoke with her about her opportunity to learn from some of the best women's basketball players in the world. We hope she will take what she learned in training camp and utilize that in her next endeavor, whether that's in the WNBA or overseas. This is not the end for her. We have a tremendous amount of respect for the University of Minnesota women's program and we will continue to support Emily in her efforts to realize her dream of playing professional basketball."
Fluker was signed to a training camp contract on June 1.
The Minnesota Lynx open their 11th year of basketball in the Twin Cities on June 6, 2009 vs. the Chicago Sky at Target Center. Lower-level tickets for the opener start at just $10 and can be purchased by calling 612-673-8400, e-mailing tickets@lynxbasketball.com, or visiting the Lynx website at www.lynxbasketball.com.
