SAN ANTONIO - With their 11-player roster finally set for the season, the San Antonio Silver Stars have wrapped up training camp and are headed west to face the Phoenix Mercury in a conference showdown to tip off the season Saturday. The game tips at 9 p.m. CDT and will be televised on San Antonio station KMYS My35.
Silver Stars head coach and General Manager Dan Hughes made his final roster move Friday morning, waiving former Texas State standout Joyce Ekworomadu to bring the final roster count down to 11 players. Earlier in the week, San Antonio waived Valeriya Berezhynska and Candyce Bingham.
The 2009 Silver Stars roster is mostly filled with familiar faces such as Becky Hammon, Sophia Young, Shanna Crossley and Vickie Johnson. Erin Buescher was married in the off-season and has changed her last name to Perperoglou, while former Silver Star Katie Feenstra, now Katie Mattera returns to the Alamo City after stints in Detroit and Atlanta. San Antonio's second round pick out of Liberty, Megan Frazee, and Australian Olympian Belinda Snell are the two newest faces to the Silver Stars.
The defending Western Conference Champion Silver Stars will return home to host the New York Liberty Saturday, June 13 with $1 draft beer, sodas and hot dogs. The team will unveil the 2008 Western Conference Champions banner before the game with the first 5,000 fans in attendance receiving a commemorative poster. Tickets start at $10.
