Memphis Redbirds News Release
MEMPHIS, Tennessee - A five-run third inning helped push the Memphis Redbirds to a 6-4 win over the Iowa Cubs (Triple-A Cubs) Saturday night in front of 9,091 fans at AutoZone Park.
Memphis (31-35) has won eight of 10 games for the first time since winning nine out of 11 from July 20-30, 2015. The Redbirds scored five runs in the third inning and a run in the fourth Saturday night and have scored in just four innings this series but won both games against the Cubs (31-35).
Carlos Peguero hit his first home run since April 25 after two trips to the Disabled List, which was a three-run shot in the third inning to give Memphis a 3-2 lead after the Cubs scored in the first and third innings. Charlie Tilson was 2-for-4 with a double and his 11th stolen base of the season, and Jose Martinez was 2-for-3 with a double and his fourth swipe of the year.
Miguel Socolovich was the fifth reliever out of the Memphis bullpen and picked up the win, and Sam Tuivailala earned his fourth save in the last six games and ninth of the season.
The Redbirds were outhit in the game 11-7 but took advantage of three Cub miscues in the game and stranded 10 Iowa runners. The Cubs left at least one runner on base in every inning except the last, when Tuivailala retired the side in order to end the game.
Alex Reyes worked 4.1 innings and gave up two runs on seven hits and while walking two and striking out six. Reyes threw 100 pitches, and 64 were for strikes.
Jeremy Hazelbaker was hit by a pitch in the third, moved to second on a failed pick-off attempt, stole third and scored on Peguero's homer in his first game back after being optioned from St. Louis, before leaving the game.
The Redbirds are one win away from their third-straight series win after it took 16 series to pick up their first series win.
The Redbirds and the Cubs play game three tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. (CT), and the Redbirds are offering a Father's Day ticket package that includes pregame catch on the field and a barbecue buffet, and the first 1,500 fans receive Cardinals adult socks. The series concludes with an 11:05 a.m. game on Monday.
