Iowa Cubs News Release

MEMPHIS, TN - The Iowa Cubs (31-35) held the lead into the third, but a five-run inning from the Memphis Redbirds (31-35) put the home team in front for good, Saturday at AutoZone Park. Falling 6-4, Iowa lost its eighth contest in 10 games.

Drew Rucinski gave Iowa five innings, allowing six earned runs on six hits to drop to 4-6 on the season. John Andreoli headed the offensive effort, going 2-for-5 with a double and one RBI.

Andreoli led off the game with a double, stole second and later scored on a single from Daniel Vogelbach to put Iowa in front early. The I-Cubs put another tally on the board in the third, but Memphis heated up in the bottom of the inning. Five runs scored with the help of a three-run homer from Carlos Peguero to boost the Redbirds to a 5-2 edge.

Memphis extended its lead with a run in the fourth and kept Iowa from scoring again until the sixth. Andreoli came through for Iowa with a two-RBI double to pull the I-Cubs within two.

Iowa threatened in the seventh with back-to-back singles from Jeimer Candelario and Matt Murton to begin the inning, but the Redbird sat down the next three batters to maintain the edge until the end.

Felix Pena and Carl Edwards Jr. pitched a near perfect relief effort as the two combined to strikeout six batters over three innings. A single from Jose Martinez in the eighth off Edwards Jr. was the only scratch against the bullpen.

Iowa and Memphis play game three of the set tomorrow at 6:05 p.m. CT. Tune in to AM 940 or stream the broadcast live at www.iowacubs.com.
