Fresno Grizzlies News Release

Grizzlies win sixth in seven, hang on 4-3 at Tacoma Fresno improves to 5-1 on current road trip; Reed homers & Rodgers goes seven strong

After their season-long five-game win streak was snapped Friday night by the Tacoma Rainiers, the Fresno Grizzlies looked to make it six out of seven in the win column Saturday evening in their first visit to the Pacific Northwest this year. Behind Brady Rodgers, currently the PCL's hottest starter, they improved to 12-10 this season in one-run games with a 4-3 victory.

Grizzlies first baseman A.J. Reed struck quickly, yanking a two-out solo shot to right field for a 1-0 first inning lead. Reed's ninth home run of the season and 31st RBI stood up until the fifth, when Tacoma took the lead on a Boog Powell RBI groundout, and a Chris Taylor RBI single. The score was 2-1 Rainiers after five innings.

Tacoma starter Jarrett Grube went just 4.1 innings, after throwing 52 pitches in the first two frames. He allowed three hits including the Reed homer, walked five and struck out five.

Reed (2-for-5) spurred another Grizz rally in the seventh, after Eury Perez (2-for-4, BB) led the inning with a single. After moving to third on a Nolan Fontana sac bunt and a wild pitch, Perez scored when Reed slapped an RBI double down the line in left. Preston Tucker (2-for-3, BB) then walked, before Matt Duffy rocketed a double into the left field corner to score Reed and Tucker, making the score 4-2 Fresno at the stretch.

The Rainiers got a run back in the seventh, when Patrick Kivlehan stroked his third home run of the season to right field, cutting the Grizzlies' lead to 4-3.

Rodgers (6-3) earned a winning decision for the fifth consecutive start, tossing seven innings, scattering eight hits. The three runs he allowed were earned, a quality start, his seventh of the season. Rodgers struck out eight, walking just one, and continues to lead the PCL in fewest batters walked per nine innings. He's issued just nine walks in 75.1 innings pitched this season.

Tacoma reliever Kraig Sitton (0-2) took the loss, allowing all three Grizz runs in the seventh.

Grizzlies closer James Hoyt picked up his league-leading 15th save in the eighth and ninth, striking out three of the four batters he faced. After getting the final out of the eighth, the right-hander whiffed two more in the ninth. Hoyt continues to be the main reason Fresno is 24-0 this season when leading after eight innings.

Even at a game apiece, the series resumes Sunday afternoon at 1:35 p.m. RHP Mike Hauschild (5-6, 3.50) will take the hill for Fresno, against RHP Donn Roach (4-4, 4.72) for Tacoma.
