
Grizz out hit Rainiers, but fall 10-4 in opener

The Fresno Grizzlies lost to the Tacoma Rainiers 10-4 Friday night; ending their five-game winning streak. In a Battle of the Joe's, Rainiers' starter Joe Wieland (5-4) picked up the win after he twirled six innings, allowing one run (earned), on seven hits with three walks and punching out five. On the other hand, Grizzlies' starter Joe Musgrove (2-3) took the loss after he tossed five innings, allowing six runs (all earned), on six hits, walking one and striking out three.
The Rainiers scored first in the bottom of the third when Boog Powell hit a two-run home run to right. His third homer of the season gave Tacoma a 2-0 lead.
The Grizzlies cut the deficit to 2-1 in the top of the fourth when Jack Mayfield hit a RBI single to right.
Tacoma extended their lead in the bottom of the fifth when Dario Pizzano doubled to deep center, scoring two runners. Then, Tyler Smith homered to left on the next pitch, scoring Pizzano. His third longball of the season gave the Rainiers a 6-1 lead.
Fresno knocked in three runs in the top of the seventh, making it a 6-4 game. Matt Duffy (2-for-4) hit a RBI single to right, scoring Andrew Aplin and Nolan Fontana (2-for-5). Then, Preston Tucker (3-for-4) tripled to deep center, scoring Duffy.
Tacoma blew open the game in the bottom of the eighth. After two infield singles and a walk, Mike Baxter lined a RBI single to center, scoring Chris Taylor. Stefen Romero (2-for-4) extended the lead after he doubled past a diving Jon Kemmer, clearing the bases. The Rainiers led 10-4 after eight innings.
Rainiers' closer Blake Parker picked up his 12th save after throwing two shutout innings, which included four strikeouts.
The Grizzlies outhit the Rainiers in the defeat 12-10; including three players with multi-hits on the night.
The two squads will meet for game two of the four-game series Saturday at 5:05 PT. Fresno RHP Brady Rodgers (5-3, 2.90) matches with Tacoma RHP Jarrett Grube (0-0, 5.40).
