Last Time Out: The Memphis Redbirds fell victim to the Norfolk Tides for the third time in the last four nights, dropping a 7-4 game at Harbor Park on a warm Friday night. Down 2-0 early, the 'Birds fought back with four runs in the fifth to take a brief lead. Kramer Robertson and Juan Yepez each hit home runs in the fifth inning. However, the lead was short-lived. The Tides roared in front with three runs in the bottom of the fifth and put the game away with two runs in the bottom of the seventh. Rylan Bannon hit two more home runs for Norfolk on Friday night. Incredibly, Bannon has hit five home runs this week and seven dingers against the Redbirds all season long.
Memphis Game One Starter: Jake Woodford makes his fifth start this season with the Redbirds in game one of today's doubleheader. In his first four starts, he allowed 12 earned runs in 16.0 IP for an ERA of 6.75 with 13 strikeouts and seven walks. His last start came last Saturday at Durham, when he allowed six earned runs on eight hits in 4.0 innings. Woodford has spent most of this season with St. Louis, making 17 of his 20 appearances out of the bullpen. His ERA in the Majors this season is 5.08 in 39.0 IP with 32 strikeouts and 17 walks.
Norfolk Game One Starter: Kyle Bradish makes the start in game one for Norfolk this afternoon. Bradish began the season with Double-A Bowie and did not allow a run in three starts. He was promoted to Norfolk on May 25 and has posted a 4.75 ERA in 13 appearances (12 starts) with the Tides. Bradish has appeared twice against Memphis this season. He started at AutoZone Park on July 16, when he allowed five earned runs on four hits and four walks in just 1.2 innings. He also appeared in relief on Tuesday, and he pitched much better, striking out five batters in 3.0 scoreless innings while allowing just one hit and one walk.
Memphis Game Two Starter: Connor Thomas will make his 15th appearance and eighth start of the season for the Redbirds in game two of today's doubleheader. Thomas started last Sunday in Durham, when he allowed just one earned run on four hits in 6.0 innings with seven strikeouts. Thomas has yielded two earned runs or fewer in ten of his last 11 outings and one run or fewer in nine of those 11. The 23-year-old Tifton, GA native was the Cardinals' fifth round pick in the 2019 MLB Draft out of Georgia Tech. Earlier this season, he became the third player from the St. Louis 2019 draft class to reach Triple-A, only after Zack Thompson and Aaron Antonini.
Norfolk Game Two Starter: Ryan Hartman makes his first start this season with the Tides in game two of today's doubleheader. The lefthander made his first appearance of the season with Norfolk on Thursday, when he struggled in relief, allowing three runs (all earned) on two hits in just 0.1 of an inning. Hartman had spent this entire season with the Sugar Land Skeeters, the Triple-A affiliate of the Houston Astros. The former ninth-round pick had an ERA of 5.03 in 13 appearances (12 starts) with 59 strikeouts and just 18 walks in 62.2 IP.
Happy to Have You, Alec: Since joining the Memphis Redbirds last week, Alec Burleson has been swinging a hot bat. The Cardinals' second-round pick in 2020 is 10-30 (BA of .333) in eight games, including an RBI single in Wednesday night's game and a two-run double on Thursday night. He has hits in each of his first eight games in Triple-A.
