Syracuse Mets News Release
Worcester, MA - The Syracuse Mets kept up their winning ways, picking up their fifth straight victory with a 6-1 win over the Worcester Red Sox on Sunday afternoon at Polar Park. The Mets took five games in the six-game set in Worcester even after losing the series opener on Tuesday. Jesús Reyes delivered another dominant outing, throwing six shutout innings of one-hit baseball while walking three batters and striking out seven. In his last four appearances, Reyes has a 0.86 ERA, allowing just two runs in 21 innings pitched.
Syracuse (34-54) put the first runs on the board in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Josh Reddick singled. David Thompson followed with a two-run home run that he crushed over the left field wall to put the Mets ahead, 2-0.
Worcester (46-42) didn't get their first hit until the bottom of the fifth inning when Ryan Fitzgerald picked up a one-out single. However, Fitzgerald was caught stealing second base with Jeremy Rivera at the plate, and then Reyes struck out Rivera for the third out of the frame.
The Mets extended their lead in the top of the eighth. Wilfredo Tovar worked a leadoff walk, and then Reddick connected on a single, putting runners at first and third base. Thompson followed with another clutch hit, this time a two-run double to extend the lead to 4-0. Thompson was responsible for four of Syracuse's six runs batted in on Sunday. After Brandon Brennan came out of the bullpen for Worcester, Chance Sisco doubled to score Thompson and make it a 5-0 advantage for the Mets.
Syracuse added another run in the top of the ninth. Mason Williams led off with a single, and with Tovar at the plate, Williams advanced to second base on a wild pitch. Tovar then delivered with an RBI single to hand the Mets a 6-0 lead.
Worcester scored its lone run in the bottom of the ninth with a Jack López leadoff home run to make it 6-1 with Syracuse still in front. That was the only run and hit allowed by Mets reliever Akeem Bostick who pitched three innings out of the bullpen. Combined, Reyes and Bostick allowed only two Worcester hits in the game.
The Mets now come back to Syracuse for a 13-game homestand. The action begins from NBT Bank Stadium on Tuesday night at 6:35 p.m. when Syracuse hosts the Buffalo Bisons.
