Clinton LumberKings News Release
CLINTON, IA - Humberto Mejia turned in his fourth consecutive strong start and the Clinton LumberKings backed him with enough support to drop the Burlington Bees 5-2 on Saturday night. Jerar Encarnacion inserted himself into many of the LumberKings (25-23) rallies with a three-hit night that included three runs scored.
Mejia (5-0) went seven innings for Clinton against the Bees (28-21) and earned the win. He allowed two runs on five hits while walking none and striking out nine.
Clinton was the first team to strike - pushing two runs across in the bottom of the second inning off Bees starter Luis Alvarado. Demetrius Sims rolled a triple down the line at third with two men out to start the rally and scored on a Justin Jones error at shortstop. The LumberKings then loaded the bases with Christopher Torres drawing a bases load walk to force home the second run of the inning.
Alvarado (2-3) was hung with the loss for his time out and was taken out of the game following the Torres walk in the second. He went just 1.2 innings, surrendering two runs, one earned, on one hit while walking three and striking out three.
The LumberKings added another run in the third to take a 3-0 lead.
Burlington then began to chip away and eventually pulled to within one. DC Arendas led off the fourth with a triple and scored on a Spencer Griffin single through the left side of the infield - Jordyn Adams then homered to left in the top of the fifth to make it 3-2.
Clinton would reclaim their three-run lead with single runs in the fifth and seventh innings. Sims brought home the fifth inning run with an RBI double to left and J.D. Osborne plated the final run of the night with an RBI single that scored Encarnacion.
Following Mejia out of the bullpen, Cam Baird and C.J. Carter combined to shutout the Bees over the final two innings. Baird earned a hold for his time - his first of the year - and Carter was awarded his third save of the season for working the ninth inning.
The LumberKings will meet the Burlington Bees for the third game of their four-game series on Sunday afternoon. Clinton will throw right-handed pitcher Chris Vallimont (3-3, 2.70). Burlington will tap righty Jose Soriano (3-4, 2.90). Fans looking to listen to the game can hear Erik Oas on the call at 100.3 FM WCCI and online at lumberkings.com via the tunein radio ap at 1:45 p.m. (CDT) with the pregame show.
Sunday's are Clinton Elotes days in Clinton with the team rebranding to new jerseys and hats as part of Minor League Baseball's Copa de la Diversion. Take part in the team's salute to the Latinx community with ethnic foods and games through out the ballpark.
Sunday will also be a "Family Funday Sunday" with free face painting, balloon artists, and postgame kids run the bases courtesy of the Children's Discovery Center.
