South Bend Cubs News Release

South Bend, IN: The South Bend Cubs were cruising with an 8-1 lead over the West Michigan Whitecaps at Four Winds Field on Saturday night as the game turned for the 5th inning.

West Michigan, whose playoffs hopes are dwindling, put together a monster comeback to cut it to 8-7. But with another rally of their own, South Bend halted the Whitecaps and walked away with a 10-7 game two win.

It was a star-studded night in Downtown South Bend for the Cubs as they sent Chicago's number one pitching prospect Brailyn Marquez to the hill. Additionally, top-10 Chicago Cubs prospect and 2018 2nd round pick Brennen Davis made his South Bend Cubs debut after being called up from extended spring training earlier in the day.

Much like last night for Riley Thompson, South Bend picked up their starter immediate run support by jumping out to a 6-1 lead through just two innings. By the time the 3rd inning rolled around, eight of the nine Cub hitters had gotten a hit or RBI in the game. That included Andy Weber and Davis.

Weber, who put together one of his best games of the year, missed the cycle by just a double. In the bottom of the 2nd, he elevated the Cub lead by five with a three-run home run deep over the right field wall. Earlier in the inning, Davis ripped his first Midwest League hit into the right-center field gap on a double to score a run.

After West Michigan made their rally, the Cubs found themselves up by just a run. That quickly changed as the bats came alive once again thanks to Weber. On his final hit of the night, he tripled off the wall in right field and scored Delvin Zinn all the way from first base. Weber later scored on Tyler Durna's RBI single.

By night's end, every Cub hitter made an impact on the game at the plate with either a hit or an RBI. Saturday night's crowd of 5,147 saw a total team effort from Buddy Bailey's crew. The win also pushes Bailey to just one win shy of tying 9th place all time on the Minor League Manager wins list. If Bailey wins two more games, he will past Lefty O'Doul to take sole possession of 9th.

The Cubs will look to win their fifth series in six tries tomorrow night in game three of four against the Whitecaps. Right-hander Derek Casey will take the baseball for South Bend on Sunday at 7:05 p.m.
