McGrew's Last Second Goal Pushes Spokane over Tri-City

Spokane, Wash. - San Jose Sharks prospect Jake McGrew scored with just three seconds left in regulation to push the Spokane Chiefs over the Tri-City Americans, 2-1 on Saturday night at Spokane Arena. The Chiefs have now won eight of their last nine games at home.

Tri-City got on the board first as Dominic Schmiemann potted his second of the year, firing a point shot that deflected off a Chief in front to beat starting goaltender Bailey Brkin to the top-left corner.

Luke Toporowski tied it up for the Chiefs late in the second period, picking up a loose puck in front of Tri-City netminder Beck Warm to punch in his 11th goal of the season on a power play at 14:35. Adam Beckman put a shot on net from the right point which was deflected in front by McGrew but initially stopped by Warm. Toporowski was there on the backside to swipe in the floating rebound and make it 1-1 heading into the second intermission.

It looked like overtime was inevitable late in the third period but forward Eli Zummack forced a turnover in the Tri-City zone and found McGrew in open space. McGrew lasered the puck under the bar on the far side to score his 12th of the season and send the crowd of over 8,000 out of their seats.

The Chiefs outshot the Americans 35-19, finishing 1-for-4 on the power play and 1-for-1 on the penalty kill.

The Spokane Chiefs hit the road for their annual New Year's Eve matchup with the Tri-City Americans in Kennewick on Monday at 7:05 p.m. Mike Boyle will have the radio call on 94.1 FM The Bear beginning with the pre-game show at 6:30.

The Chiefs return to Spokane Arena on Friday, January 4 to face the Kamloops Blazers. It will be Princess & Superhero Night at the Arena!
