Broncos Fall Behind in Divisional Clash against Blades

The Swift Current Broncos and Saskatoon Blades squared off for their last WHL game of 2018 at the Innovation Credit Union i-Plex on Sunday afternoon. Swift Current fell behind early and had their two-game point streak come to an end in a 9-3 loss.

Blades forward Kristian Roykas Marthinsen scored his 10th of the season only 11 seconds into the game.

Max Gerlach finished a tic-tac-toe play involving team mates Chase Wouters and Gary Haden to increase the Saskatoon lead to 2-0.

A WHL first happened for Swift Current Broncos' rookie blue liner Billy Sowa as the 16-year-old buried his first career WHL goal with a good low shot that beat Blades netminder Nolan Maier by the lower right pad.

Majid Kaddoura turned around and deposited his first goal for Saskatoon to put the Blades ahead by a pair at the 9:54 mark of the first.

The Blades kept pressing as Tristen Robbins made a sweeping play from the Broncos corner of the ice and whipped a long pass over to Nolan Kneen who then lifted a shot over a sprawling Isaac Poulter, giving Saskatoon a 4-1 lead.

Broncos rookie Matthew Culling responded for Swift Current as he notched his seventh of the season on a pretty play that had Ben King pick up his club-leading 17th assist. Culling has extended his goal-scoring streak to five straight.

Swift Current looked to claw back within one as they were rewarded their first power play minutes into the middle frame. However, Blades forward Kirby Dach had other ideas and went forehand-backhand on Poulter while on a shorthanded breakaway.

The Broncos got that goal back 15 seconds later as Joona Kiviniemi and Ethan Regnier executed an established give-and-go with Kiviniemi capping the play off. For the rookie Finnish Import, the goal marked his 10th of the season, placing him second in club goal scoring.

The back and forth play continued as Riley McKay put the Blades ahead by three 45 seconds later. The score was 6-3 Saskatoon after 40 minutes of play despite the shots on goal being 35-12 for the visitors.

Saskatoon proved to be too much in the third period as they added three more goals to send Swift Current to a 9-3 loss.

Shots on goal were 47-15 in favour of Saskatoon. A bright spot for Swift Current was special teams play as their power play went 1/2 while the penalty kill held the Blades off the score sheet in four tries.

These two clubs meet again when they ring in the New Year on January 1st at the SaskTel Centre. Puck drop is at 2:00pm CT.
