Mavs Lose Tight Game to Oilers in Shootout, 3-2

TULSA, Oklahoma - The Missouri Mavericks lost a tight battle to the Tulsa Oilers, 3-2, in a shootout Saturday night at BOK Center. The Mavericks came back from one-goal deficits twice in the game, but Aaron Davis' goal in the shootout proved to be the difference. Jeff MacDermid and Mike Burgoyne tallied the a goal each for Missouri who fell to 29-24-5 and into a tie for fourth place in the Northern Conference with Mississippi. Tulsa (27-25-6) is just three points below the Mavericks and RiverKings with just six games remaining in the regular season.

The Oilers scored first at the 2:05 mark of the opening period on a shorthanded goal courtesy of the Riddle brothers. Troy Riddle fed his brother Jake who skated in and beat Mavericks' goaltender Gerry Festa. Missouri tied the game late in the period on MacDermid's 21st goal of the season. The Mavs forward took a centering pass from Braden Walls and redirected it past Oilers' goaltender Marco Emond at the 18:54 mark. Tulsa outshot the Mavericks 14-12 in the period, but the teams were tied 1-1.

Luke Stauffacher scored the only goal of the second period and gave the Oilers a 2-1 lead at the 18:29 mark. He took a pass from Travis Banga on a rush into the Mavericks' zone and lifted the puck over the left leg pad of Festa.

The Mavericks bounced back again in the third period to tie the game at the 9:20 mark. Burgoyne tallied his eighth goal of the season on assists from Jeff Christian and Simon Watson. Missouri was forced to kill a five-on-three penalty in the final minute of regulation and into the overtime. The Mavericks successfully killed the penalties and forced the shootout.

Oilers' goaltender Marco Emond stopped all four shots he faced in the shootout and Davis and Marty Standish scored for the Oilers to finalize the score at 3-2. It marked just the third loss in 12 shootouts for the Mavericks this season.

Tulsa outshot the Mavericks 39-26 and earned their first win over Missouri in the last four matchups. It was the final game of the regular season between the teams. Missouri finished 1 for 7 on the power play and killed all eight of the Oilers chances.

The Mavericks take on the Mississippi RiverKings Sunday at Independence Events Center at 3:05 p.m. It is the only Sunday home game this season for Missouri and the game will be televised on Metro Sports.
