Allen Americans News Release
ALLEN, Texas - The playoff-bound Allen Americans clinched no less than second place in the Southern Conference tonight despite losing 2-1 in a shootout to the Mississippi RiverKings. The contest puts Allen's record at 38-15-5 (81 points).
Similar to last night, Allen got on the board first. Bruce Graham scored from the slot on a pass from Justin Bowers behind the net at 11:55 of the opening frame. A little over four minutes later, Louis Dumont knotted the score when Derek Landmesser hit him with a pass as he entered the Americans' zone. The Americans headed to the locker room in a 1-1 deadlock, even though they outplayed Mississippi in the period.
Neither of the teams could get anything generated on special teams in the middle frame, which had a combined nine penalties. Out of the seven goals that were scored last night between the clubs, none were with the extra-man advantage or shorthanded.
At the 36-second mark of the third, Mike Salekin had a goal waived off because of goaltender interference. The play continued back and forth. With nine minutes left, Chris Whitley stoned Tyler Doherty cold on a breakaway opportunity. Allen called a timeout with 2:12 left after a late penalty against the âKings was called. The Americans failed to score on the power play, and the game went to overtime.
Once in overtime, the players were unable to put the biscuit in the basket, and the game was forced into a shootout.
Allen's Colton Yellow Horn and Tobias Whelan scored in the fourth and fifth rounds of the shootout, but Mississippi's Matt Summers, Louis Dumont and Ryan Held got tallies to give the RiverKings the extra point.
The Americans get a break for a few days before heading across the Metroplex Wednesday to play the Texas Brahmas at NYTEX Sports in the last regular season meeting. The club then travels to Rapid City for a set of weekend games Friday and Saturday.
