Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - Rio Grande Valley raced out to a 5-0 lead before the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs found the back of the net in a 5-2 loss to the Killer Bees Saturday night at the CenturyTel Center. With the defeat, Bossier-Shreveport has now lost three straight games in regulation for the first time in the past two seasons.
Jeff Kyrzakos and Mark Johnson scored third period goals for the Mudbugs, but not before Aaron Lee put up a natural hat trick and added an assist for a four-point night. Zak McClellan also had four points on a goal and three assists and Andy Franck made 37 saves for Rio Grande Valley.
The Killer Bees took control midway through the first period with three goals in a span of less than three minutes. Nathan Ansell started the outburst with a powerplay goal at 11:26 to open the scoring. Aaron Lee scored his first goal at even strength and followed that with another powerplay tally one minute later to make it 3-0 for the visitors. The highlight of the first period was James DeLory's convincing win in a fight with Bees rookie Justin Kanigan.
Lee completed his hat trick in the second period, tipping in a shot by Jay Hardwick to make it 4-0 for Rio and end John DeCaro's night, as he was relieved in goal by Ken Carroll. The Killer Bees continued to pour it on in the third when McClellan scored on a one-timer in front at 5:45.
Kyrzakos then broke the goose-egg for Bossier-Shreveport, deflecting in Clay Plume's long shot to make it 5-1. Johnson knocked home a rebound in front a few minutes later to get the âBugs within three at 5-2, but they would get no closer.
John DeCaro took the loss after stopping 12 of 16 shots, while Ken Carroll turned aside five of six in relief. The Mudbugs outshot the Killer Bees 39-22, but went 0 for 4 on the powerplay. The Bees converted two of their three powerplay chances.
The Mudbugs will now travel to Corpus Christi to close out a weekend set of three games in three days tomorrow afternoon at the American Bank Center. Opening faceoff between the âBugs and IceRays is set for 3:00 pm, with radio coverage starting at 2:40 on News Radio 710 AM KEEL.
