Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks overcame a two-goal deficit to beat the Wichita Thunder, 3-2, in a shootout Friday night at the opening of the brand-new Independence Events Center. Jeff MacDermid scored the game-tying goal and added a shootout marker in his first game with the Mavericks. Goaltender Doug Groenestege stopped 23 of 25 shots for his third win of the season and the Mavericks improved their overall record to 3-6-1.
Missouri pressured the Wichita zone early in the first period and ended up with 16 shots in the opening frame, but were unable to get the puck past Scott Campbell. Joel Hansen scored the first goal at the Independence Events Center on a backdoor pass from Glenn Detulleo to give the Thunder a 1-0 lead at the 18:30 mark of the period. Wichita had just five shots in the opening period, but held a 1-0 lead going into the intermission.
Marc Belanger scored his fourth goal of the season on the power play at the 2:47 mark of the second period to give the Thunder a 2-0 lead. He took a feed from Chris McAllister and buried a shot just under the cross bar. That would be all the offense for the visiting Thunder.
Quickly after the Belanger goal, Mavericks' defenseman Shaun Arvai scored the first goal in Missouri Mavericks history at Independence Events Center. Arvai blasted a slap shot just off a face-off that beat Campbell glove side. The goal came at the 3:06 mark of the second period and the Mavericks had just a one-goal deficit heading to the third period.
Missouri continued their pressure in the third period and Jeff MacDermid finally tied the game with 4:45 remaining in the game. In his first game with the Mavericks, MacDermid tallied his first goal on an assist from Sean Perkins and tied the game at two.
After a scoreless overtime period in which Missouri had two separate power plays, the game went into a shootout. Goaltender Doug Groenestege stopped all three attempts by the Thunder and the first three Mavericks players scored to give the home team the victory. Chad Hinz, MacDermid and Bill Vandermeer all scored in the shootout.
Mavericks' single-game tickets are now on sale at the box office at Independence Events Center. Box office hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and at 10 a.m. on Saturday game days. Tickets start at just $12 and are still available for opening weekend. Visit www.MissouriMavericks.com for more information.
