Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release
BOSSIER CITY, LA - The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs earned their first home win of the season Saturday night at the CenturyTel Center, topping the Rapid City Rush 3-2 in a shootout. Brett Smith scored twice and Ken Carroll made 34 saves as the âBugs rallied from a 2-0 deficit to snap a five-game home losing streak.
Smith also scored in the shootout along with Joe Blaznek and Simon Mangos as the Mudbugs outscored Rapid City 3-1 to win their second shootout this year. Carroll shut the door on the Rush after giving up two goals in the first period and stopped three of four Rapid City players in the shootout to earn his first win of the season.
The Mudbugs had a number of quality scoring chances in the opening period, but it was Rapid City who would take a 2-0 lead after one. Brendon Hodge scored the Rush goal after banking the puck off Carroll and into the net. Rich Hansen then deflected in a centering pass to put the visitors on top by two goals.
Rapid City had the early edge in the second frame before Bossier-Shreveport broke through on the powerplay. Brett Smith tipped in a Simon Mangos shot from the point and past Danny Battochio to get the Mudbugs on the scoreboard at 14:01. Then with only 35 seconds remaining in the period, Joe Blaznek fired a shot off the crossbar, but Brett Smith jammed in the rebound to tie the game at two after 40 minutes of play.
Rapid City outshot the âBugs 10-6 in a tight third period, but neither team could find the net and the game went to overtime. The five minutes of four-on-four hockey passed without a goal and the Mudbugs went to a shootout for the second time this season.
Joe Blaznek scored to open the shootout before Mangos scored in the third round to make it 2-0 âBugs. Just after Les Reaney tallied for the Rush, Smith ended the game with the third Mudbugs goal of the shootout.
Carroll is now 1-3-0 on the year after the 34-save effort in goal. Danny Battochio made 35 stops for Rapid City but fell to 2-2-1. The Mudbugs converted 1 of 4 powerplay chances, while the Rush was 0 for 3.
The Mudbugs will now have four days off before starting a home-and-home series with the Mississippi RiverKings next Thursday night at CenturyTel Center. The âBugs will host the RiverKings at 7:05 Thursday before playing at Mississippi on Friday night. Group packages and mini-plans are available through the Mudbugs office at 752-BUGS, while individual tickets are on sale through Ticketmaster at 741-9700.
