Kansas City Mavericks News Release
INDEPENDENCE, Missouri - The Missouri Mavericks scored three power play goals en route to a 4-2 victory over the Wichita Thunder Saturday night at Independence Events Center. Mavericks forward Jeff MacDermid tallied two goals and Jeff Christian added three assists as the Mavericks won their second straight game. Goaltender Mike Gorman finished with 38 saves on 40 shots for his first win of the season and Missouri improved their overall record to 4-6-1.
Missouri is now 4-0-0 against the Thunder and 2-0-0 at Independence Events Center. The Mavericks next game is Friday, November 20 against the Tulsa Oilers at home. Missouri will wear Truman specialty jerseys that will be auctioned off directly following the game. Proceeds from the jersey auction will benefit the Truman Library Foundation.
"It's so hard to win on the road in this league that you have to win at home," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "It is so exciting to be here in this new building and get a couple wins in front of our fans."
After allowing the only goal in the first period to Troy Ofukany, the Mavericks lit the lamp for three goals in the second period, all by way of the power play. Bill Vandermeer tied the game at the 11:37mark on a blast from the left point and MacDermid scored his two goals just 1:21 apart to give the home team a 3-1 lead. Christian assisted on all three goals for his second three-point game of the season and the Mavericks held the two-goal advantage going into the second intermission.
Mike Kneeland made it a one goal game midway through the final period, but again Missouri answered on Brett Hammond's third goal of the season to make it a 4-2 final score.
Missouri finished 3-7 on the power play and killed three of four penalties. The Thunder outshot the Mavericks 40 to 37.
Mavericks' single-game tickets are now on sale at the box office at Independence Events Center. Box office hours are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and at 10 a.m. on Saturday game days. Tickets start at just $12 and are still available for opening weekend. Visit www.MissouriMavericks.com for more information.
