Mavericks Fall in OT against Utah

April 6, 2018 - ECHL (ECHL) - Kansas City Mavericks News Release

WEST VALLEY CITY, Utah - Grizzlies captain Ryan Walters found the back of the net nearly three minutes into overtime to lift Utah (27-29-9-6) over Kansas City (34-31-4-2) by a 6-5 final score Friday night at the Maverik Center.

The loss mathematically eliminates Kansas City from playoff contention.

The Mavericks had to weather an early storm from the home team as Utah raced out of the gates and immediately established itself in the Grizzlies' offensive end. Utah ultimately scored on the team's 13th shot of the night, Kyle Thomas lighting the lamp for a 1-0 edge. Matt Robertson responded with just 1:16 left in the period, though, to pull even before intermission.

Kansas City claimed its first lead of the night early in the second as Mark Cooper found twine at 6:18, but Utah responded about 10 minutes later, Thomas again, to draw even. The Mavericks regained the advantage off the ensuing faceoff, Robertson with his second of the night to retake a 3-2 lead, but the edge was not to be as Utah tied the game at three apiece after 40 minutes.

A wild start to the third period saw the Grizzlies build a 5-3 lead in the first 90 seconds, scoring two quick goals from Jake Marchment and Brendan Harms for a two-goal cushion. Jared VanWormer answered back quickly, lighting the lamp just one minute later to pull the Mavericks back within striking distance. Greg Betzold then delivered the tying goal with six minutes remaining in regulation and the game eventually headed to overtime.

Nearly three minutes into overtime, Grizzlies captain Walters found the back of the net to secure the win.

The Mavericks wrap up their season tomorrow night at Utah, an 8:05 p.m. CT puck drop.
