Mavericks Fall in Homestand Finale

Kansas City Mavericks News Release

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - The Missouri Mavericks wrapped up their three-game home stand on Monday night with a 3-2 loss to the Tulsa Oilers. The loss was Missouri's first in regulation at home since November 30 and dipped its record to 10-12-5 on the season.

After Ville Husso made back-to-back starts last weekend against Alaska, it was reigning ECHL Goalie of the Year Josh Robinson who got the nod in net for the Mavericks on Monday. He was sharp early as the Oilers tested him with 12 shots over the first 15 minutes of the game, and he turned away each of them. Tulsa, though, broke through for a pair of goals by Emerson Clark 50 seconds apart to grab the lead headed into intermission. The first came when Clark crashed the net and jammed home a rebound, while the second was a one-timer from the right circle with Tulsa working a 5-on-3 power play. Missouri sent seven shots on Tulsa netminder Jamie Phillips but couldn't find the back of the net in the first.

Missouri wasted little time in getting momentum back on its side when the second period began. Dane Fox tied Sam Povorozniouk for the team lead with his 10th goal of the season 45 seconds into the frame. Phillips made the initial save on Darren Nowick's shot from the right wing, but Fox jabbed a shot through Phillips to pull the Mavericks within one. Tulsa had two quality chances to restore its two-goal lead but Robinson stopped Clark on a breakaway and then on a 2-on-1 to prevent the Oilers' forward from completing his hat trick.

The Mavericks came into tonight's game without having allowed a power play goal in each of their prior three home games (8-for-8). Clark's 5-on-3 goal snapped the perfect streak, and then the Oilers used another 5-on-3 chance to double their lead in the third. Garrett Ladd fired a slap shot from the right point that appeared to deflect off of Rocco Carzo's leg and into the net just under the crossbar. Play got chippy as the third period continued on and with 8:53 remaining gloves began to drop. Seconds after a Tulsa penalty ended, Danick Gauthier caught Luke Juha with an elbow and that hit ignited a fight between Wes Cunningham and Ryan Obuchowski. With time winding down the Mavericks' offense sparked to life with Robinson pulled for the extra attacker. Kyle Schempp netted his second goal in as many games by deflecting Matt Finn's point shot and cut Tulsa's lead to one.

Robinson shouldered the loss with a 35-save effort. The Mavericks finished the game 0-for-3 on the power play and 5-for-7 on the penalty kill.

Mark your calendar! The Mavericks return home on Wednesday, Dec. 28 at 7:05 p.m. to face the Utah Grizzlies. Groups of 15 or more are eligible for discounted tickets and preferred seating based on availability. Call the Mavericks at 816-252-7825 to book your group outing.
