Kansas City Mavericks News Release

INDEPENDENCE, Mo. - The Missouri Mavericks went to a shootout for the third consecutive home game on Saturday night at Silverstein Eye Centers Arena. The Alaska Aces got the better of tonight's breakaway competition, 2-0, and claimed victory by a 2-1 final. The loss moved the Mavericks' record to 10-11-5 on the season.

Ville Husso played a major role in the Mavericks' shootout win over the Aces one night ago. He stopped all four shots he faced in overtime, including a 3-on-0, and then denied all five shooters in the shootout. Husso carried that momentum into the first period tonight and swatted away each of the 14 shots the Aces sent his way. He got a little help from the crossbar late in the stanza as Ben Lake clanged one off the iron. Kyle Schempp provided the offense in the first, and his fourth goal of the season cued a shower of teddy bears on the Mavericks' annual Teddy Bear Toss night. Schempp not only scored the lone first-period goal, but he was also credited with four of Missouri's five shots in the period.

The second period was a tug-of-war for control of momentum and the game. The Mavericks edged ahead in shots for the period 7-6, and each team was given two power play opportunities. Missouri produced what was the best scoring chance of the frame when Rocco Carzo set up Dan Correale in front from the right wing. Correale appeared to have a wide-open net to shoot for but Alaska goalie Kevin Carr lunged to his right for an improbable stick save.

Alaska evened the score in the third period when Tim Coffman picked up a loose puck in the slot and fed it past Husso. It was Coffman's 10th goal of the season and the only goal Alaska scored in regulation. The Mavericks appeared to reclaim the lead a few moments later when Reed Seckel crashed in on a breakaway. His shot lodged under Carr as the Aces' goalie drifted backwards across the goal line. After the officials conferred, the play was ruled a no-goal and the teams eventually headed to overtime.

Dane Fox had a chane to end it in the final minute of the extra session, but his shot rang off the crossbar. In the shootout Daniel Moynihan and Tim Wallace scored for Alaska while Carr stopped Sam Povorozniouk and Radoslav Illo

Husso took the SO loss despite turning away 31 of 32 shots. The Mavericks finished the game 0-for-5 on the power play and 4-for-4 on the penalty kill.
