South Carolina Stingrays News Release
NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk Admirals (5-17-4-0) scored three power play goals and got a hat trick from defenseman Mikael Tam in a 5-2 defeat of the South Carolina Stingrays (12-10-1-1) at the Norfolk Scope on Saturday night.
Derek DeBlois scored both goals for South Carolina in the loss, netting each tally on the power play in the second period. South Carolina goaltender Adam Carlson finished the contest with 25 saves.
Neither team was able to score in the opening period of the game. The Admirals outshot the Rays 10-8 in the first 20 minutes.
Norfolk then took a 1-0 lead at 3:03 of the second on a power play goal by team captain Josh Brittain. The Admirals extended their advantage to 2-0 with another power play goal by Tam at 7:36 of the middle frame.
DeBlois came through twice for South Carolina with the man-advantage later in the period to even the game. His first strike made it 2-1 at 12:58 with assists from forward Joe Devin and defenseman Max Nicastro.
The Warwick, R.I. native then tied things up at 1-1 with a one-timer from defenseman Alex Brooks at 17:00. The assist was Brooks' first career ECHL point, coming in his eighth game with the team.
Forward Kelly Zajac earned the second assist on the goal, his 19th helper and 26th point of the season. Zajac now has points in four straight games since DeBlois returned from injury. The game remained even as the teams headed to the third period.
The Admirals struck for three goals in the final frame, re-taking the lead and holding on for the win. Forward John Dunbar scored at 5:15, before Tam notched the final two tallies of the night on the power play at 12:38 and with an empty net at 19:12.
