Kansas City Mavericks News Release

RAPID CITY, South Dakota - The Missouri Mavericks lost their inaugural season opener Friday night, 3-2, to the Rapid City Rush at Rushmore Plaza Civic Center Arena. Carlyle Lewis and Sam Bowles each tallied a goal for the Mavericks, but Rapid City forward Colt King's third period goal proved to be the difference.

King had two goals in the contest and was the game's first star. Rush goaltender Miguel Beaudry stopped 24 of 26 shots for his first win of the season while Mavericks goaltender Mike Gorman finished with 32 saves on 35 shots. The Mavericks were without two forwards for their opening game. Kyle Bochek (injury) and Bill Vandermeer (illness) each sat out the team's first game.

"It was a heartbreaker," said Mavericks' Head Coach Scott Hillman. "Overall, we played a real solid road game in which the power play looked good and the penalty kill was adequate. We lost the even strength game, but we also had two forwards who weren't able to play."

Missouri scored the first goal in the team's existence at the 7:33 mark of the opening period when Carlyle Lewis buried a power play goal on assists from Mark Van Vliet and Ted Vandermeer. The Rush answered with a pair of goals in the second period including Colt King's first of two goals.

Mavericks' forward Sam Bowles tied the game with just over a minute remaining in the second period on the team's second power play goal of the evening. He was assisted by Sam Perkins and Chad Hinz. Missouri finished 2-5 on the power play.

King tallied his second goal of the night and eventual game winner only 56 seconds into the final period. Missouri tried to tie the game by pulling Gorman from the net, but it was not to be as the hometown Rush finished with a 3-2 victory.

"We stood up very well physically," said Hillman. "I am definitely excited about the future and we took a ton of positives from tonight."

"It was a disappointing loss, but a great game," said President and General Manager Brent Thiessen. "We are real happy with the intensity and excited to come back tomorrow and hopefully get a win."

Single-game tickets are now on sale for all 32 of the Mavericks' home games. Season tickets, group tickets and mini-plans are available by calling the Mavericks front office at (816) 252-7825. For more information, please visit www.MissouriMavericks.com.
