Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs News Release

BOSSIER CITY, LA - The Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs fell 6-1 to the Laredo Bucks in their 2009-2010 season opener on Friday night at the CenturyTel Center. Laredo scored three times in the third period to shut down the Mudbugs' thoughts of a comeback, while Joe Zappala scored Bossier-Shreveport's only goal of the night.

The Mudbugs were outshot 40-24 in the contest and were 0-4 on the powerplay, while Laredo was 2-7 with the man advantage. Despite the loss, John DeCaro still made 34 saves for the 'Bugs in his first game with the team since April of 2008.

The first period began with a feeling-out period for both teams. The Mudbugs generated chances on their first powerplay, but couldn't get on the board before Laredo did just that on their first opportunity. Longtime Bucks star Jeff Bes one-timed a puck past John DeCaro for a powerplay goal at 10:43 to put Laredo on top 1-0 after one.

2009 CHL Rookie of the Year Darryl Smith made it 2-0 in the second period with a breakaway goal, which was followed less than four minutes later by Igor Igarunov's tip-in that extended the advantage to 3-0 Laredo after 40 minutes.

Lance Monych scored his first of the night early in the third to make it 4-0 before the 'Bugs could answer. Joe Zappala got Bossier-Shreveport on the board only minutes later, muscling his way to the front of the net and poking the puck between the legs of Jean-Philippe Levasseur, who made a total of 23 saves. As the period went on though, the Mudbugs pushed the tempo and Laredo took advantage. Bes set up Monych for his second of the game on a two-on-one break and then Darryl Smith picked up his second of the night on another odd-man rush to cap the 6-1 Bucks victory.

The Mudbugs will now travel to South Texas for their first road game of the season tomorrow night against the Corpus Christi IceRays. Opening puck drop at the American Bank Center is set for 7:05 pm Saturday. The game can be heard on AM 1130 KWKWH and will also be shown live on CHL TV.
