Gorillas Shutout Thunder On Opening Night
October 16, 2009 - Central Hockey League (CHL)
Amarillo Gorillas News Release
Park City, KS 10/16/09 - Your Amarillo Gorillas came out firing as they collected an opening-night shutout victory to begin the season versus the Wichita Thunder 5-0.
The opening period saw the Gorillas penalty kill shine, stopping all three Wichita opportunities. Magnificent play by newly acquired defenseman Jake Obermeyer and goaltender Mike Brown kept the Thunder off the board. Amarillo's power play did not convert on their either of their opportunities.
In the middle frame, last season's Gorillas "rookie of the year" Jake Morissette parked himself at the far side of the Wichita goal and hammered home a pretty pass from forward Stuart MacRae to put the Gorillas up 1-0. Less than two minutes later, 08-09 leading scorer Stuart MacRae, from the same spot on the ice as Morissette earlier, scored off a terrific feed from Jake Morissette to give the Gorillas a 2-0 going into the intermission. Wichita continued to struggle with the man advantage, ending the second 0-6 on the power play.
The final period was all Amarillo as David Nimmo and Jake Morissette added two more goals to the Gorillas lead. Joe Guenther would add a breakaway goal with 38-seconds remaining in the game to give Amarillo the 5-0 victory. Stuart MacRae earned the second star of the game while Jake Morissette garnered the first star.
The Gorillas will return to the Amarillo Civic Center for Amarillo's home-opening weekend Saturday, October 17th against the Odessa Jackalopes and Sunday, October 18th versus the Mississippi RiverKings.
