Evansville Otters News Release
(SAUGET, Illinois) endash Lefty Matt Zielinski weaved his way through the Gateway Grizzlies lineup, throwing his 1st career complete game shutout in a 5-0 Evansville Otters win on Tuesday night.
After allowing a leadoff double, Zielinski retired the next 15 hitters in order and also set down 10 batters in a row later in the game as well.
First baseman Andrew Kuhn propelled Evansville early with a two run home run to right field. It was the first professional home run for Kuhn and his first hit of the young season.
The Otters also rallied in the fifth inning against Gateway starter Zach Robertson. After an RBI single from Frank Martinez, outfielder Deangelo Mack hit a run-producing gap double for the 4-0 lead. Shortstop Jon Karcich then brought in Mack with a double to deep left-center field as Gateway trailed 5-0.
The Grizzlies would stage a late rally in the ninth inning but Matt Zielinski got Landon Hernandez to fly out to the warning track with the bases loaded and preserve the win.
Evansville has now won back to back games for the first time this season, improving to 5-5. Gateway stands at 4-6 following the loss.
Zielinski is now 1-1 this season, holding a 1.06 earned run average in his first two starts. The rookie struck out six hitters in the victory. Zach Robertson (0-2) is the losing pitcher after allowing five runs in just as many innings.
The Otters will look to win their third consecutive game on Wednesday night with ace Dan Blewett (1-0, 0.00 ERA) on the mound against fellow right-hander Cale Johnson (0-1, 7.56 ERA). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m. at GCS Ballpark in Sauget, Illinois.
