Gateway Grizzlies News Release

Sauget, Ill. - Evansville lefty hurler Matt Zielinski was four hits and a walk away from perfection Tuesday night at GCS Ballpark, as the Grizzlies failed to keep pace with the Otters of Evansville and fell 5-0.

Gateway collected only four knocks in 31 at bats in the evening affair with two of those hits delivered by the leadoff bat of Grizzlie Jonathan Johnson. The home club issued a late rally in the ninth, putting three runners aboard for slugger Landon Hernandez who could not deliver an extension and flied out to seal the shutout.

Zielinski, a 6'3 200 pound South Hampton, PA native finished with nine innings pitched, four hits, one walk, and six strikeouts to move his season's record to 1-1.

Gateway arm Zach Robertson (0-2) did not fair the same. The south paw struggled in his second appearance, surrendering five runs on nine hits with three walks and four strikeouts in the losing effort. Reliever Zach Treece offered the lone bright spot for the Grizzlies in the 5-0 defeat, pitching two full innings of punch-out baseball and retiring all six of his batters faced with three K's.

"See the ball, hit the ball," stated shortstop Vladimir Frias. "We need to play baseball as hitters and see the ball in the zone and not try and hit homers every time we are at the plate. If we do that, we will be in good shape to back our pitchers up."

Frias and the rest of the Grizzlies will get their chance, as Gateway will host the Otters of Evansville Wednesday night at 7:05 pm at GCS Ballpark.
