Traverse City Beach Bums News Release

TRAVERSE CITY, MI - The Traverse City Beach Bums saw a couple of players extend hitting streaks, but in the end the River City Rascals prevailed in game one of the series by a 5-1 score.

River City would break a scoreless tie in the fourth inning when the Rascals scored an unearned run on a bloop single from Gerardo Avila. RC would tack on two runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth to push the advantage to 4-0.

Traverse city would get one of the runs back in the eighth as Brian Heere hit his second homer of the season to cut the lead to 4-1. The homer also extended Heere's hitting streak to seven games. River City would add an unearned run in the eighth to create the final score.

The win went to Jason Sullivan (2-0) who went five shutout innings for the Rascals. David Deminsky (1-1) took the loss for the Beach Bums. Traverse City got some good relief pitching from a pair of rookies as Jason Mattila and Nick Capito combined to allow just one earned run over 3.1 innings of work.

Offensively, in addition to the eighth inning homer, Chase Burch was on base three times including two hits, extanding his own hitting streak to seven games. He now stands nine hits shy of becoming the fourth player in Beach Bums history with 200 in his career.

The middle game of the series features a battle of lefthanders as Bennett Whitmore (0-1, 1.42) for the Beach Bums against Justin Edwards (1-1, 4.09) for the Rascals. Coverage on Sunny Country 101.9 begins at 7:45 p.m. outside of an 8:05 scheduled first pitch.
