Washington Wild Things News Release

CRESTWOOD, IL - The Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, came up just short in a 3-2 loss to the Windy City Thunderbolts in game one of the series on Tuesday night.

Gary Lee took the loss for the Wild Things (5-5), but was efficient through six-plus innings, giving up three runs (two earned) on eight hits.

After giving up the early runs Lee settled in and the Wild Things defense helped pick up their pitcher throughout the evening.

In the third, Shain Stoner made a terrific play behind second base to throw out Billy Nowlin, and newly signed Jeriel Waller gunned down pinch runner Brian Burke, who was trying to score from second on a single by Weaver in the sixth. Waller's throw beat Burke by several feet.

Waller also made a terrific running catch in the gap in left-center to deny Mike Torress of extra bases in the seventh.

Windy City (7-3) opened the scoring in the first frame when Chad Cregar singled through the right side of the infield, scoring Mike Torres. Torres reached base on a one out doubled and then advanced to third on a stolen base.

Three batters later, after Brandon Decker and Billy Nowlin got on base courtesy of a walk and a hit-by-pitch, Mike Mobbs reached on an infield error to score Chad Cregar.

Three walks and two hit batsmen from Windy City starter Dustin Williams allowed the Wild Things tie up the game.

An RBI groundout by Allen Boyer scored Jeriel Waller to make it 2-1. Robbie Garvey then walked and stole second. Doug Thennis followed with a walk to load the bases and Michael Mooney was hit by a pitch to drive in Michael Bando for the tying run.

Windy City took the lead right back for good in the ensuing frame.

Travis Weaver singed off of Gary Lee to start off the inning, and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Two batters later, Chad Cregar would score Weaver on an RBI fielder's choice to make it 3-2.

Neither team would plate a run the rest of the way.

The Wild Things and Thunderbolts will meet for game two of the series on Wednesday at 11:35 am local time. Randy Gore has the call on the flagship station for Wild Things baseball, 1450 AM WJPA beginning at 11:25.

Justin hall will be on the mound for the Wild Things opposite Mike Recchia for Windy City.
