Rockford RiverHawks News Release
LOVES PARK, Ill. - A former first-round pick is among two new Rockford RiverHawks.
The team announced on Tuesday that it has signed pitchers Kasey Kiker and Cliff Archibald. Kiker, a left-hander, was the Texas Rangers' first-round pick in the 2006 draft. Archibald, a right-hander, was the Pittsburgh Pirates' 36th-round draft pick two years ago.
Kiker, 24, was a the 12th overall pick in a first round that included eventual Cy Young winners Tim Lincecum and Clayton Kershaw. He spent 2009-10 with the Frisco Roughriders of the Class AA Texas League. Last year with high Class A Myrtle Beach of the Carolina League, he was 3-4 with a 7.05 ERA and no saves in 30 appearances, one as a starter. He struck out 54 and walked 52 in 44 2/3 innings. He hit seven batters and threw 11 wild pitches. The Rangers released Kiker last December and he signed a minor-league contract with Philadelphia in February. The Phillies released him late in spring training.
Archibald reached short-season Class A with the Pittsburgh organization. Last year with the State College Spikes of the New York-Penn League, he was 0-1 with a 4.11 ERA and a save in 19 relief appearances. He struck out 22 and walked 17 in 30 2/3 innings.
The RiverHawks made room on the roster with the release of outfielder Jeremy Richter and pitcher Rob Currie. Richter was 1-for-6 with a RBI in two games. Currie had no record and a 12.60 ERA in six appearances.
