May 29, 2012 - Frontier League (FL)
Normal CornBelters News Release

The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, started off strong in the opening innings of a 12-game road trip but faltered down the stretch, falling 10-5 to the Rockford RiverHawks Tuesday night. Jordan Stern (1-0) took the win for Rockford, while reliever Austin Bailey (0-1) got the loss for Normal.

The 'Belters jumped out to an early advantage when centerfielder Alvaro Ramirez led off the game with a walk before advancing to second on a wild pitch, stealing third, and scoring on a Sam Judah sacrifice fly.

Normal's offense added two more runs in the second, as third baseman Derek Luciano crossed the plate thanks to a bases loaded walk by Ramirez, while designated hitter Chico Gomez came home on an RBI groundout by second baseman Sean Wilson. The 'Belters got another tally in the 3rd, when first baseman Steven Felix came in to score on an error by Rockford catcher Elvin Millan Jr., increasing the lead to 4-0.

But Rockford would come roaring back in the bottom of the inning, accumulating five runs on four hits off Normal starting pitcher Tyler Lavigne, taking a 5-4 lead.

A based loaded walk in the 5th by left fielder Justin Clark brought home 'Belter catcher Pat Trettel to knot the score up at fives.

Each team's bullpen held the opposing offense in check until the 7th when the RiverHawks exploded for four runs, jumping out to a 9-5 advantage. They would go on to get one more in the 8th and take the first game of a three game set.

The series continues Wednesday evening at 7:05. Tyler Stovall (1-1, 4.15 ERA) will take the ball for Normal against Rockford's Ziggie VanderWall (0-0, 9.00 ERA). Pregame is on WJBC.com at 6:50.
