Marquez Overwhelms TinCaps in BG's 6-2 Victory
August 25, 2014 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Bowling Green Hot Rods News Release
Fort Wayne, Ind. - German Marquez has enjoyed a dominant return from the disabled list, and he continued that stretch on Monday night. He dazzled by facing just one above the minimum as the Bowling Green Hot Rods (Class-A/Tampa Bay Rays) leveled the series with the Fort Wayne TinCaps (San Diego Padres), 6-2.
Marquez (5-6) allowed a first-inning home run to Fernando Perez with one out, but it would turn out to be the only base runner he would concede. Marquez then retired the next 17 batters before hitting his pitch count. He struck out eight batters, and lowered his earned run average to 3.23. Marquez has enjoyed a 2.04 mark since July 12, when he began his current run.
Willy Adames put the Hot Rods on the board in the top of the first inning. He led off the game with a triple on the first pitch of the contest. Two tosses later, he scored on a wild pitch.
Perez's home run in the bottom-half tied the game, and the game was locked in a 1-1 draw until the sixth when Bowling Green broke it open. Spencer Edwards led off with a bloop single to center field. Adames followed with a single of his own, and Kean Wong then laid down a perfect bunt to load the bases with nobody out. Alexander Simon came through with a single up the middle. It initially scored two as the throw was late into third trying to retire Wong. Perez's then tried to retire Simon who was moving up to second, but his throw went into right field. That allowed Wong to score, but Franmil Reyes over-ran the baseball in right field, and Simon scored on his own single as the Hot Rods grabbed the 5-1 lead.
Wong, who was named a Midwest League Postseason All-Star before the game, collected his third hit of the night with one out in the eighth, as he hit a triple into the right-field corner. Oscar Hernandez would plate him with a sacrifice fly, and the lead was stretched to 6-1. Fort Wayne brought a run back in the ninth, but it was not enough to spoil Marquez and the Hot Rods' night in the 6-2 triumph.
Brad Schreiber faced the minimum in two relief innings to drop his earned run average to 3.70.
Kyle Lloyd (6-5) started for Fort Wayne and took the loss. He allowed five runs, three of them earned, before being replaced in the sixth inning.
Both teams will look for the series victory in the rubber match on Tuesday night. The Hot Rods will turn to left-hander Ben Griset, and the Pepsi Pre-Game Show will begin at 5:50 p.m. CT on 1340 WBGN - The Ticket. First pitch will be tossed at 6:05 p.m. CT. The Hot Rods return to Bowling Green Ballpark for the final three regular-season games of the campaign on Saturday, August 30.
