
Captains Win Marathon Game 9-7 in 10 Innings

(Lansing, MI)- Nellie Rodriguez doubled home two runs in the top of the tenth inning and the Captains beat the Lugnuts 9-7 on Monday night. Rodriguez later scored on a wild pitch in the inning to give the Captains a three run advantage (9-6) headed to the bottom of the tenth inning. With the win and the Great Lakes loss, the Captains reduced their magic number to two in order to clinch a playoff birth. The Captains are now 9-7 in extra innings this season.
Lake County took the early 2-0 lead. Ivan Castillo singled home a run and the other scored on a Brian Ruiz single and the Captains led after one and a half innings. Lansing scored three runs in the bottom of the second inning, D.J. Davis homered, David Harris doubled and then Chris Schaffer homered and the score was 3-2 Lansing. The Lugnuts added another run on a solo homer from Rowdy Tellez, his first of the season and the score was 4-2 Lansing after four innings.
Lake County scored a run in the top of the fifth inning on an RBI single from Nellie Rodriguez and the score was 4-3. Lake County tied the score at 4-4 on a wild pitch in the top of the sixth inning.
The Captains took the lead in the eighth inning, on an RBI single from Paul Hendrix. The Captains led 5-4, but added another run on a wild pitch and led 6-4 headed to the bottom of the eighth inning. Dawell Lugo singled home a run for Lansing in the bottom of the eight inning to make the score 6-5. The Lugnuts scored the tying run in the ninth inning on an RBI single from Chaz Frank.
RHP Dace Kime (7-13) was the starting pitcher for Lake County. Kime did not get a decision and pitched five and one third innings. Kime allowed six hits, four earned runs, three homers and he fanned four. The Captains used four relievers on the night. The win went to Trevor Frank (5-4). Frank pitched one and one third inning and allowed one earned run on one hit, one walk and three strikeouts. Carlos Melo pitched the bottom of the tenth for his fourth save of the season.
LHP Matt Dermody (4-5) started the game for the Lugnuts. Dermody did not get a decision. Dermody pitched three innings and allowed five hits and two unearned runs. He walked one and fanned four. The Lugnuts used four pitchers in relief. The loss went to Roberto Espinosa (2-2).
Lake County will stay on the road for a six game road trip. On Monday the Captains will conclude a three-game series with the Lansing Lugnuts. The Captains will start LHP Luis Lugo (8-9, 5.38) and the Lugnuts will counter with RHP Jeremy Gabryszwski (6-5, 4.31). First Pitch will be at 7:05 PM from Cooley Law School Stadium in Lansing, Michigan.
