Lansing Lugnuts News Release
LANSING, Mich. - The Lake County Captains (34-28, 61-71) outlasted the Lansing Lugnuts (27-36, 59-73) for a 9-7 win in ten innings on Monday night at Cooley Law School Stadium.
Lansing and Lake County swapped the lead four times, but three runs in the top of the tenth were enough for the Captains to hold off one final Lugnuts rally.
First baseman Nellie Rodriguez hit a two-run double against reliever Roberto Espinosa (Loss, 2-2) and scored on a wild pitch later in the inning to give the Captains a 9-6 lead heading to the bottom of the tenth.
Lake County reliever Carlos Melo (Save, 4) walked two batters and allowed a single before hitting second baseman Dickie Joe Thon with a pitch to plate a run and put the potential tying run at second, but left fielder Chaz Frank grounded out to end the game.
With Lansing trailing 6-5 in the ninth, Frank singled to tie the game against Lake County reliever Trevor Frank (Blown Save, 3)(Win, 5-4) and force extra innings.
The Lugnuts saw a power surge early in the game. After falling behind 2-0 in the top of the second, center fielder D.J. Davis crushed a solo home run to cut the deficit in half. After a double by David Harris, catcher Chris Schaeffer hit a two-run home run to put the Lugnuts ahead 3-2.
First baseman Rowdy Tellez hit his first home run since joining the Lugnuts in the fourth inning, a solo shot over the center field wall.
The Lansing defense committed four errors in the game, leading to three unearned runs for the Captains.
Lake County hit just 5-for-24 with runners in scoring position, stranding 14 runners on base.
The Lugnuts and Captains play the rubber match of the three-game series on Tuesday night at 7:05 p.m. at Cooley Law School Stadium. It's an Eat-A-Palooza presented by Gordon Food Service, featuring $20 for admission and all-you-can-eat food!
Right-hander Jeremy Gabryszwski (6-5, 4.31) will make his team-high 25th start for the Lugnuts, countered by Lake County lefty Luis Lugo (8-9, 5.38).
Tickets are available for purchase via the stadium box office, telephone at 517-485-4500 and online at lansinglugnuts.com . To sign up for Lugnuts Alerts, text LUGNUTS to 80373.
