Dayton Dragons News Release
Dayton, Ohio-Dayton starting pitcher Nick Travieso and three relievers combined on a four-hit shutout as the Dragons defeated the Great Lakes Loons 2-0 on Monday night. The win gave the Dragons a lead of one and one-half games in the East Division Second Half wildcard race with seven games to play.
Travieso (13-5) went the first six innings, allowing just three hits with no walks and five strikeouts to notch his league-leading 13th victory of the season. The win was the 20th of Travieso's Dragons career, extending his club record. Over Travieso's last eight starts, he is 6-0 with a 1.18 ERA.
Nolan Becker pitched a scoreless seventh inning for the Dragons and Evan Mitchell worked the eighth. Alejandro Chacin tossed a perfect ninth inning to record his 20th save. Since July 1, Chacin ranks second in all of Minor League Baseball in saves with 15.
The Dragons scored twice in the first inning to take an early lead. Robert Ramirez tripled off the glove of the left field with two outs and scored on Phillip Ervin's single to left field to get the scoring started. Ervin stole second and scored on Tanner Rahier's single to center to make it 2-0 and close out the scoring for the night.
Great Lakes did not advance a runner past second base in the game. They had runners as far as second in the sixth and seventh innings but went 0 for 4 with men in scoring position.
The Dragons collected just six hits. Ramirez and Ervin each had two.
The win marked the 12th shutout win of the season for the Dragons, their highest season total since they set a club record with 14 in 2011.
The Dragons (29-33) host the Loons (28-33) on Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. in the last game of the three-game series at Fifth Third Field. Jackson Stephens (2-5, 4.21) will start for the Dragons against John Richy (0-0, 1.29).
