West Michigan Whitecaps News Release
COMSTOCK PARK, MI - West Michigan Whitecaps' pitcher Jon Maciel has been named the Midwest League Pitcher of the Week for the week of August 18-24, the league announced on Monday.
Maciel was rewarded for an outstanding performance on Thursday against Dayton at Fifth Third Ballpark. The 21-year-old right-hander allowed just one hit over seven shutout innings and registered a career-high 10 strikeouts, including six straight punch-outs to finish his outing. After giving up a single to the second batter of the game, Maciel allowed just three additional baserunners on a walk, a hit batsman and an error. He combined with relievers Montreal Robertson and Julio Felix on a three-hit shutout, leading the Whitecaps to a 5-0 win.
An 18th-round pick out of Cal State-Long Beach in the 2013 draft, Maciel is 6-6 with a 3.97 ERA in 25 appearances (18 starts) for West Michigan this year. In 118 innings of work, he has 85 strikeouts and 23 walks with seven quality starts.
Maciel becomes the fourth recipient of the Midwest League Pitcher of the Week award this season. Austin Kubitza was recognized twice during the first month of the year and Jonathon Crawford was honored in late May.
The Whitecaps continue their final road trip of the regular season with a 7:05 p.m. game on Monday night against the South Bend Silver Hawks. RHP Matt Davenport (5-5, 2.88) is scheduled to pitch for West Michigan against RHP Blake Perry (7-6, 4.59) of South Bend. The next home game at Fifth Third Ballpark will feature post-game fireworks on Saturday, August 30, and the Whitecaps are guaranteed at least one home playoff game on Thursday, September 4. Group and individual tickets can be reserved by calling the Whitecaps' front office at 616-784-4131 or visiting www.whitecapsbaseball.com.
