Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
DAVENPORT, IOWA - The Kernels struck out 18 times in a 3-2 loss at Quad Cities on Monday night. The teams combined for 33 total strikeouts on the evening. Cedar Rapids stranded a total of 14 men on base and went 2-for-13 with runners in scoring position. Quad Cities hit two home runs in the win. Kernels starter Stephen Gonsalves struck out 10 in just five innings of work. The Kernels look to avoid the sweep at Modern Woodmen Park on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
Both teams piled up the strikeouts at Modern Woodmen Park on Monday. The 18 strikeouts for the Kernels offense broke the previous season-high of 14. The Kernels pitching staff struck out 15 River Bandits, which was one below a season-high for both Kernels pitching and River Bandits hitting. Every Kernel in the starting lineup struck out at least once. Four players had at least three punch outs. For Quad Cities, eight of nine players in the lineup struck out at least one time.
The Kernels (39-24, 70-63) had plenty of chances to score throughout the game as they stranded 14 on base. Cedar Rapids left the bases loaded three separate times, leaving three on base in the first, fourth, and seventh innings.
Gonsalves started for the Kernels and struck out 10 River Bandits through just five innings. He allowed two runs on two hits while walking none. He left with the game tied 2-2 for a no-decision. The 10 strikeouts for Gonsalves matched an individual season-high, set by both Lewis Thorpe and Chih-Wei Hu.
Jared Wilson relieved Gonsalves in the sixth inning, and Quad Cities (31-32, 66-66) immediately took a 3-2 lead on a solo home run by James Ramsay. The towering blast to right field was Ramsay's third home run of the season. That ended up being the final tally of the night. Wilson (3-3) took the loss, allowing the one run in two innings of work. He allowed two hits while striking out four and walking one. Josue Montanez went one scoreless inning, striking out one while allowing one hit and one walk.
Chris Lee (8-6) collected the win for the River Bandits, going 3 2/3 innings in relief. He allowed no runs on one hit while striking out seven and walking two. Keegan Yuhl got a strikeout for the final out of the game, notching his first save.
The teams were scoreless through the first three innings, combining for four total hits. The Kernels stranded six through the first three frames but broke through with a pair of runs in the fourth inning. Tanner Vavra and Michael Quesada started the inning with back to back doubles to tally the first run. Ryan Walker then singled into right-center, putting the Kernels up 2-0. However, the Kernels left the inning wanting more as they left the bases loaded for the second time in four innings.
Gonsalves allowed just one hit to the River Bandits through three scoreless innings, but he allowed two runs with one swing of the bat in the fourth inning as Quad Cities tied the game. A.J. Reed nailed a two-run home run to right field, making the score 2-2. The second hit of the night for the River Bandits was Reed's sixth long ball of the season and scored Ryan Bottger, who was hit by a pitch to begin the inning.
Troy Scriber started for the River Bandits and pitched 3 2/3 innings. He allowed two runs on six hits while striking out seven and walking three. Jordan Mills went 1 1/3 innings in relief, allowing no runs on one hit with three strikeouts.
The final game of the series at Quad Cities is on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m. LHP Lewis Thorpe (3-2, 3.96) gets the start for the Kernels while Quad Cities counters with RHP Michael Feliz (8-4, 3.69)
The Kernels return home on Wednesday to host Kane County at 6:35 p.m. It's a Free Money Wednesday, sponsored by First Federal Credit Union. $500 will be given away the main gates.
