Manitoba Tops Americans Twice
November 15, 2010 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Manitoba Moose News Release
Anniversaries, Santa Claus, and a couple of wins kept Moose fans cheerful all weekend through a pair of home wins over the visiting Rochester Americans. The Moose started a four-game home stand with wins of 3-2 and 6-2. The first win came on Friday, November 12 on Heritage Night when the Moose were celebrating their own 15th anniversary in Winnipeg and also the 75th season of the American Hockey League. Then the following night just hours after Winnipeg's Santa Claus parade, the home team put up six goals in front of over 9,000 fans at MTS Centre.
Friday, November 12, 2010: Manitoba 3, Rochester 2 The Moose have struggled to keep pace in the shot department this season having been outshot in nine of 13 games leading into Heritage Night. They definitely bucked the trend in this game, firing 25 shots by the halfway point of the game. Manitoba's free shooting ways resulted in three goals with the red-hot Cody Hodgson breaking a 2-2 tie and putting home the game winning goal late in the second period. Eddie Lack started his third game in a row for the Moose and recorded his third win in a row by stopping 21 of 23 shots by the Amerks.
Saturday, November 13, 2010: Manitoba 6, Rochester 2 The home team didn't let off the gas pedal after a strong outing on Friday night. Manitoba shelled Rochester netminder Jacob Markstrom with 43 shots on Saturday and broke away with three goals in the third period for a convincing 6-2 win. The Moose scored two power play goals for the second time this season and with a pair of his own, Hodgson now has six goals over the past four games. Tyler Weiman took over between the pipes in this one helping Manitoba to their fourth consecutive win.
Moose Notes
HIGH OCTANE OFFENCE: Over the two games against Rochester, the Moose outshot the Americans by a total of 88-42. The Friday night total of 45 was the highest single game total by the Moose since Feb. 22/09 when Manitoba fired 46 against the Chicago Wolves. Manitoba's leading shot taker against the Americans last weekend was Jeff Tambellini with 10 and their most lethal shooter was Cody Hodgson who scored three goals on nine shots. Manitoba's six goals on Saturday matches a season high as the Moose have racked up six in three games this season. With 50 goals this season, the Moose average 3.33 goals per game ranking them fifth in the AHL in that category.
PICK YOUR POISON: Manitoba's productive offence as of late can be credited to a pair of trigger happy forwards new to the team this season. Over the past three games Cody Hodgson and Jeff Tambellini have produced eight goals for the Moose, two of which were game winners. Combined they have also taken 24 shots over the same span. With nine goals this season, Hodgson leads the Moose and is tied for sixth in the AHL. Tambellini scored his 100th career AHL goal on Saturday night.
PACKING THE HOUSE: The Manitoba Moose entertained their biggest crowd of the season on Saturday night as 9,094 fans watched the Moose chalk up a 6-2 win over Rochester. Through six home games this year the MTS Centre ranks as the second busiest AHL building with an average of 7,888 fans per game. The lowest Moose game attendance this season would still rank higher than the average attendance of 27 other teams in the league.
Upcoming Opponents
The Moose have a busy week ahead with the second annual Super Skills Competition on Tuesday at MTS Centre. Defenceman Travis Ramsey will return to defend his title as hardest shooter. Then two nights later the Moose host the Rockford IceHogs for the first of two games. With two wins over Rockford already this season, the IceHogs will be a feisty opponent for the Moose this Thursday and Friday.
