Make It Back-To-Back Wins against Pheasants

Winnipeg Goldeyes News Release
All the Winnipeg Goldeyes needed on Sunday afternoon was a great start, some bullpen help and one big inning.
The Fish got all three on a beautiful, sunny Sunday and whipped the Sioux Falls Fighting Pheasants 7-1 in front of 5,118 at Shaw Park.
Starter Chris Salamida pitched six innings of shutout baseball to open things up; Alex Jones, Billy Spottiswood and Stephen Kahn came on in relief and gave up only one run over the final three innings; and the Goldeyes put up a five spot in the fifth as Winnipeg won its second straight from the Pheasants and improved to 28-20 on the season.
The Goldeyes also remained alone in first place in the American Association's North Division.
"We were fundamentally sound on defense until the ninth inning," said Goldeyes manager Rick Forney. "But our guys had some good at bats today and that makes it a lot easier when you can put up some runs for our pitching staff.
"Sally (Salamida) did a good job pitching himself out of some stressful situations today. He didn't throw a lot of pitches through the first six innings and we could have sent him back out there for the seventh, but he did a good job and he didn't need any more stressful situations. This also gave us a good opportunity to give our bullpen some work without it being a real stressful situation for a change. It's nice to give our relievers a 6-0 lead."
While the Goldeyes pitchers were taking care of the Pheasants - Salamida scattered six hits while the three relievers gave up four more - the Fish finally scored more than three runs in a game for the first time in six outings.
In the first inning, Chris Roberson singled, Jon Weber singled and Yurendell de Caster drove home Roberson with the first run of the game. In the fifth, however, the Fish broke it open.
With one out, Josh Mazzola beat out an infield single and went to second on an errant throw. Ridge Carpenter singled home Mazzola and after David Narodowski struck out, Price Kendall doubled home Carpenter. Roberson was safe on an error as Kendall scored and then Roberson scored on a double by Weber. Weber scored on a single by de Caster and suddenly it was 6-0 and the game was all but in the bag.
In the bottom of the eighth, de Caster and Luis Alen led off the inning with singles and Mazzola drove home de Caster with a single of his own. Sioux Falls scored its only run in the top of the ninth off Kahn.
De Caster had his best game since returning from Mexico, going three-for-four with two RBI and a run scored; Weber went two-for-four with an RBI and a run scored; and Mazzola went two-for-four with a run scored and an RBI.
Salamida got the win (2-2, 3.99 ERA) while Sioux Falls starter Rod Scurry (3-3, 3.56) suffered the loss.
The Goldeyes and Pheasants will play Game 3 of this four-game series on Monday night. Ace Walker (4-2, 2.94 ERA) will take the ball for the Goldeyes while Peter Gehle (4-3, 4.46 ERA) will start for Sioux Falls.
Game time is 7 p.m. and it can be heard live on TSN 1290 with Paul Edmonds calling the play-by-play.
