Gary SouthShore 5, Lincoln 4 (11 innings)
With the score tied and two outs in the bottom of the 11th inning, RailCats 3B Brian Kolb stepped into the batter's box for just the second time on the evening. Kolb, who entered the contest as a defensive substitution in the ninth inning, already had a sacrifice bunt to his credit. But simply laying one down wouldn't get it done in this crucial at-bat. Kolb needed a hit, and that's just what he got, singling to third base and driving in RF Mike Massaro for the walkoff, 5-4 victory. Massaro was one of five RailCats batters with multiple hits, going 2-for-6 with an RBI and the game-winning run to his credity. The Saltdogs took a 4-3 lead in the top of the 10th frame on an RBI fielder's choice from 1B John Alonso. But the RailCats answered in the bottom of the inning, setting the stage for the dramatic victory in the 11th. Alonso picked up a game-high three RBI, going 1-for-3 on the night.
Sioux City 8, St. Paul 4 (10 innings)
The Explorers scored four runs in their first nine innings of work. But with the score tied after all scheduled frames had been played, Sioux City doubled down, scoring four more runs in the 10th to take a decisive, 8-4, 10-inning victory. The Explorers exhibited patience at the plate in the final inning, drawing four walks and making timely contact to drive in the four runs. With his club already leading, 5-4, Sioux City 2B Mike Murphy singled in two and all but secured the X's victory. Murphy drove in thee runs in total, going 2-for-5 from the nine hole. Saints leadoff SS Adam Frost scored twice and drove in another run to highlight his 2-for-4 performance.
Winnipeg 3, Sioux Falls 1
The Pheasants outhit the Goldeyes on Saturday, 10-9. But timely extra-base hits from Winnipeg proved vital, with the Goldeyes prevailing, 3-1. Winnipeg opened the second frame with back-to-back-to-back extra-base hits - a triple surrounded by doubles - to plate two runs and go on top for good. The inning-opening two-bagger from 1B Josh Mazzola was one of his game-high three hits and helped raise his season average to .273. Mazzola now has 11 doubles on the season. On the mound for Winnipeg, starting pitcher Todd Privett struck out six Sioux Falls batters in 6.2 innings of work while allowing only one run on six hits and two walks.
Fargo-Moorhead 6, Kansas City 2
RedHawks CF Nic Jackson hit two solo home runs against Kansas City on Saturday, propelling his club to a 6-2 win. Jackson went 3-for-4, scored thrice and batted in two. With Jackson and the rest of the Fargo-Moorhead offense clicking, RedHawks starting pitcher Jake Laber was putting together an impressive night on the mound. Laber struck out five Kansas City batters in 6.2 innings, surrendering no runs on six hits and two walks. Laber lowered his ERA to 5.17 with the win. The T-Bones got on the board late thanks to a two-run ninth-inning double from C Bubby Williams, but Kansas City couldn't mount a comeback, falling four runs shy of Fargo-Moorhead.
Wichita 6, Amarillo 3
After watching DH John Rodriguez get intentionally walked with the score tied, 3-3, in the top of the eighth inning, Wichita 1B Gerardo Avila made the Sox pay for that strategic pass. The 6-foot-2 lefty took the first pitch he saw and launched it over the outfield wall, turning a deadlocked score into a 6-3 Wichita advantage. The Wingnuts carried that score to victory. Avila's blast was his first of the year, as well as his only hit of the contest. No one was likely happier to see the home run than starting Wichita pitcher Derek Blacksher, who in the previous inning gave up the game-tying single to Amarillo DH Chuck Lofgren. Blacksher picked up one more out in the bottom of the eighth before handing the game over to the bullpen The win was Blacksher's fifth of the season.
Grand Prairie 8, Laredo 2
AirHogs leadoff CF Keanon Simon paced the Grand Prairie offense Saturday, going 5-for-6 and scoring three times to lead his club to an 8-2 victory over Laredo. Simon led a group of seven Grand Prairie players with multiple hits. Just two Lemurs - SS Jimmy Mojica and 2B Anthony Scelfo - accomplished that feat. Both players registered doubles and a run, while Scelfo crossed home plate, himself. Starting AirHogs pitcher Will Irvin picked up the win in his first appearance with Garnd Prairie, tossing five innings and allowing two runs on four hits with five strikeouts.
Worcester 11, El Paso 10
After allowing a two-run homer that pulled El Paso to within just one run of Worcester, Tornadoes reliever Nick Serino struck out the next two Diablos batters to secure his club's 11-10 victory. Serino earned the save, despite surrendering two runs on two hits in the ninth inning. At the plate for El Paso, leadoff CF Jerod Edmondson went 4-for-5, including two-run home runs in both the fourth and fifth innings. The fifth-inning blast tied the score at eight runs apiece, and Worcester didn't trail from that point on. El Paso RF Welington Dotel led his club in hits, going 3-for-4, scoring twice and batting in a run.
