X's Get Wild Win over St. Paul

St Paul, MN-----The Explorers defeated St. Paul Sunday 3-2, scoring on a wild pitch in the ninth inning. St. Paul pitcher Chris Odegaard uncorked a wild pitch that scored Wally Backman, Jr. from third base as he was trying to intentionally walk Brandon Newton in the ninth inning. That run gave the Explorers the win, their second in as many games in this series against the Saints.
Backman led off the ninth with a double and had moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Tyler Goodro. After Mike Murphy struck out for the second out of the inning, Odegaard threw a pitch over the head of the catcher Benji Johnson on the first pitch to Newton that allowed Backman to score, what proved to be the winning run.
The first three innings of the game was scoreless as Explorers righthander Ty Marotz and St. Paul righthander Alberto Rolen were hooked up in a pitchers duel. The Saints took a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning on a RBI double by Ole Sheldon. The Explorers responded with a run in the fifth inning on a sacrifice fly RBI by Youske Inoguchi that scored Murphy who had singled earlier in the inning. Adam Frost hit a lead off home run in the sixth that gave St. Paul a 2-1 lead, but the Explorers tied the game in the eighth inning on a RBI double by Kris Sanchez. That setup the heroics in the ninth inning for the Explorers.
Eddie Delacruz, who pitched the eighth inning picked up the win and Chris Bodishbaugh retired St. Paul in 1-2-3 fashion in the ninth to get his tenth save of the season.
The third game of the four-game series will be played Monday at 7:05 at Midway Stadium.
