MacDonald's OT Winner Lifts Cyclones over Jackals 5-4

CINCINNATI, Ohio - Less than 24 hours after shutting out the Elmira Jackals (9-12-1-2), the Cincinnati Cyclones (16-8-1-1) scored four goals in the final period and overtime session to rally and defeat their Big Apple State foes by a 5-4 final score in front of 3,485 at U.S. Bank Arena on Saturday night. Like last night, five different Cyclones scored in the victory, giving the team their seventh come-from-behind win of the season. Fresh off his impressive win, goaltender Joe Howe (W, 29 saves, 2-0-1-0) stood strong in net, turning aside 29 of the 33 shots he faced.

In a reversal of last night's matchup, the visitors set the tempo early and quickly shot out to a 2-0 lead. After an unfortunate Cyclones turnover, Jackals leading goal scorer Danny Hobbs netted his eighth tally of the season on a rebound in front of the net at 9:15. When Logan Shaw took a kneeing penalty, Matt Carter scored on the power play with a wrist shot at 14:17. The Cyclones found new life, however, when Jack Combs blasted his first goal of the season over Russ Stein's (L, 31 saves, 0-0-1-0) outstretched glove at 18:39, drawing his team within one at the first intermission.

Although the Cyclones outshot the Jackals 25-22 through two frames, they were unable to score on two power play opportunities in the second stanza and entered the final period trailing by one.

The Jackals extended their lead early in the final regulation frame when their points leader Jordan Pietrus scored his fourth of the season at 3:22. One minute later, however, Barry Almeida again made it a one-goal game on a shot from the boards that slipped past Stein at 4:25. The goal provided the Cyclones with the momentum they needed and at 6:22, Jonathan Hazen evened the score at three after carefully navigating through the Jackals' defense.

However, when Tony Turgeon was given a five-minute match penalty for an illegal hit to the head, the Jackals capitalized on the opportunity. Just 12 seconds into the power play, Ludwig Karlsson gave his team the lead again when he scored at 14:33. The home team wasn't to be counted out, though, and Logan Shaw sent the game to overtime when he recorded an unassisted goal with less than two minutes remaining in regulation.

With less than one minute to go in the bonus session, Shaw won a faceoff and delivered the puck to defenseman David MacDonald, who notched the game-winner on a top-shelf, one-timer that found its way past Stein. With the win, the Cyclones have now earned points in five consecutive games.

After the Christmas break, Cincinnati will embark on a four-game road trip beginning Friday, December 27 when they visit the Evansville IceMen at 8:15pm. Fans can hear coverage of the game on the Cyclones Radio Network (CyclonesHockey.com, America One, Cyclones Mobile App) beginning at 7:45pm.
