Christmas "Bell's" are ringing Kalamazoo heads into the holiday break with a 2-1 victory over Toledo
December 21, 2013 - ECHL (ECHL)
Kalamazoo Wings News Release
Kalamazoo, MI- Receiving two goals in the second period, the Kalamazoo Wings snapped a four-game (0-3-0-1) home winless streak with a 2-1 victory over the Toledo Walleye during the Bell's Winter White Blue Ice Game.
Making his Walleye debut the night before, Maxim Shalunov gave Toledo the lead midway into the first period by notching his first goal of the season with a wrister from the left circle.
Finding the puck in a scramble in front of the Walleye net, Brett Ponich tied the game at 1-1 with his second goal of the season 2:43 into the second period.
Kalamazoo grabbed the lead for good late in the period with a power-play goal from Eric Kattelus (9th). Skating up the right wing, Kattelus flung a shot off the blocker of Hannu Toivonen and into the net. The goal snapped a 0-for-34 power-play drought for the K-Wings, which dated back to December 5th.
The K-Wings defense dictated the final 20 minutes holding the Walleye to five shots. Jordan Binnington, who has won four out of his last five starts, made 21 saves to improve his record to 8-5-0-0.
Kalamazoo will begin a three-game road trip this Friday, December 27th with a 7:05 p.m. encounter against the Reading Royals.
The K-Wings will return home on Tuesday, December 31st for a 7 p.m. face-off versus the Cincinnati Cyclones at 7 p.m. during the 12th Annual New Year's Eve Bash, presented by COOL 101 and WWMT News Channel 3.
Following the game, the K-Wings will host a postgame bash featuring a live DJ, as well as a public skate in both Wings Stadium and The Annex.
Over the course of the past 11 years, the K-Wings New Year's Eve Bash has become the premiere celebration destination for families.
